The perfect Lens for Infrared?

Seid gegrüßt, Freunde der hochmodernen Fototechnik. Im November letzten Jahres kaufte ich mir das Viltrox 16/1.8 beim Sonderverkauf zum Schwarzen Freitag für 509€ im Onlineshop des Herstellers. Der reguläre Preis liegt bei 599€. Das Objektiv ist recht neu. Erhältlich ist es seit Frühjahr 2024 für Nikon Z und Sony E Anschluss. Ich habe das Objektiv hauptsächlich für die Astrofotografie gekauft. In anderen Bereichen, wie Landschaftsfotografie, Light Painting oder Infrarot, brauche ich keine Blende von 1.8.

Greetings, friends of ultra-modern photographic technology. In November last year, I bought the Viltrox 16/1.8 during the Black Friday special sale for €509 in the manufacturer's online shop. The regular price is €599. The lens is quite new. It has been available for Nikon Z and Sony E mount since spring 2024. I bought the lens mainly for astrophotography. In other areas, such as landscape photography, light painting or infrared, I don't need an aperture of 1.8.

Viltrox? What kind of manufacturer is that?

Viltrox klang für mich im ersten Moment nach billigem China Müll aus Kunststoff. Die Preise für deren Objektive sind klein, was also durchaus zu meiner Idee passte. 16 mm Brennweite mit einer Blende von 1.8 für 600€? Da muss doch irgendwo ein Haken sein. Ich vermutete anfangs, dass dieses Objektiv eine miserable Abbildungsqualität hat. Vergleichbare Objektive anderer Hersteller, wie das Sony 14/1,8 GM oder das Sigma 14/1.8 haben einen wesentlich höheren Preis.

At first, Viltrox sounded to me like cheap Chinese rubbish made of plastic. The prices for their lenses are low, which suited my idea. 16 mm focal length with an aperture of 1.8 for €600? There must be a catch somewhere. I initially suspected that this lens had a miserable image quality. Comparable lenses from other manufacturers, such as the Sony 14/1.8 GM or the Sigma 14/1.8 have a much higher price.

Ich sah und las einige Reviews, vor allem von Astrofotografen. Alle waren von der Linse begeistert. Also bestellte ich ein Exemplar, mit dem Gedanken im Hinterkopf, dass ich es ja wieder zurück schicken kann, wenn das nicht meinen Erwartungen entsprechen würde. Nach dem ersten Test rieb ich mir verwundert die Augen. Bei offener Blende lieferte das Objektive eine große Schärfe, und das nicht nur in der Bildmitte. Auch in den Rändern war die Schärfe gut. Auch ansonsten war ich begeistert. Das Gehäuse ist komplett aus Metall. Blendenring und Fokus laufen weich und präzise. Im ersten Moment fand ich die Idee, ein Display in ein Objektiv einzubauen etwas merkwürdig. Letztendlich ist das gerade in der Dunkelheit sehr nützlich.

I saw and read a few reviews, especially from astrophotographers. They were all enthusiastic about the lens. So I ordered one, with the thought in the back of my mind that I could send it back if it didn't meet my expectations. After the first test, I rubbed my eyes in amazement. With the aperture open, the lens delivered great sharpness, and not just in the centre of the image. The sharpness was also good at the edges. I was also impressed in other respects. The housing is made entirely of metal. The aperture ring and focus are smooth and precise. At first, I found the idea of integrating a display into a lens a little strange. Ultimately, this is very useful, especially in the dark.

Mit dem kleinen Schalter kann man den Blendenring zwischen stufenloser und stufenweiser Arbeitsweise verstellen. Mit den beiden Tasten an der anderen Seite des Gehäuses lassen verschiedene Funktionen speichern, beispielsweise Fokus auf die hyperfokale Distanz oder unendlich.

The small switch can be used to adjust the aperture ring between stepless and stepped operation. The two buttons on the other side of the housing can be used to save various functions, such as focus on the hyperfocal distance or infinity.

Über den eingebauten USB C Port kann man Firmware Updates auf das Objektiv spielen. Über Bluetooth kann man das Objektiv mit dem Smartphone verbinden und einige Einstellungen verändern und den Fokus kalibrieren.

Firmware updates can be installed on the lens via the built-in USB C port. You can connect the lens to your smartphone via Bluetooth and change some settings and calibrate the focus.

Vor einigen Tagen kam ich auf die Idee, das Viltrox in der Infrarot Fotografie zu testen. Viele Hoffnungen hatte ich nicht, dass das funktioniert. Man findet keinerlei Informationen im Internet, in der Datenbank von Kolari Vision findet man das Objektiv nicht. Offensichtlich hat das bisher niemand getestet. Eigentlich auch nicht weiter verwunderlich. Es wird wohl niemand eine Ultra-Weitwinkel-Objektiv mit einer Blende 1,8 für die Infrarotfotografie kaufen.

Ich montierte das Viltrox an die undefiniert umgebaute Nikon Z5 und schraubte ein 550 nm Infrarot-Passfilter an das Objektiv. Nach den ersten Testaufnahmen aus dem Küchenfenster war ich doch sehr erstaunt, dass die Bilder scharf waren und keinen Hotspot zeigten. Ich nahm die Kamera und spazierte zu einem nahe gelegenem verlassenen Eisenbahngelände.

A few days ago I had the idea of testing the Viltrox in infrared photography. I didn't have much hope that it would work. You can't find any information on the Internet, and the Kolari Vision database doesn't contain the lens. Obviously nobody has tested it yet. Not surprising really. Nobody is likely to buy an ultra-wide-angle lens with an aperture of 1.8 for infrared photography.

I mounted the Viltrox on the undefined Nikon Z5 and screwed a 550 nm infrared pass filter to the lens. After the first test shots from the kitchen window, I was very surprised that the images were sharp and showed no hotspot. I took the camera and walked to a nearby abandoned railway site.

Wie in den nächsten beiden Bildern zu sehen, produzierte das Viltrox dann doch eine Art Hotspot. Nicht wie üblich als heller Fleck in der Bildmitte, aber in der Bildmitte wird das infrarote Licht stärker. Es ist also ein Bereich mit kräftigerer Farbe in der Bildmitte sichtbar, obwohl die infrarote Strahlung im Blickfeld gleichmäßig ist. Als besonders störend empfinde ich das nicht. Bei vielen Motiven wird die Bildwirkung dadurch sogar verstärkt.

As can be seen in the next two images, the Viltrox did produce a kind of hotspot. Not as a bright spot in the centre of the image as usual, but the infrared light is stronger in the centre of the image. This means that an area with a stronger colour is visible in the centre of the image, although the infrared radiation is uniform in the field of view. I don't find this particularly disturbing. In many cases, it actually enhances the effect of the image.

Gegenlicht funktioniert mit infrarotem Licht meist gar nicht. Die Ergebnisse sind fürchterlich. Aber mit dem Viltrox funktioniert sogar das einigermaßen, zumindest wenn man die Blende auf einen Wert zwischen 1,8 und 2,8 stellt.

Backlighting usually doesn't work at all with infrared light. The results are terrible. But with the Viltrox, even that works reasonably well, at least if you set the aperture to a value between 1.8 and 2.8.

Wenn man das Bild in schwarz weiß konvertiert, verschwinden die Lensflares fast vollständig.

If you convert the image to black and white, the lens flares disappear almost completely.

Am meisten hat mich überrascht, dass das Viltrox auch bei offener Blende scharfe Bilder liefert. Nachfolgend zeige ich ein Bild mit Blende 1,8 und einen 100% Crop aus der oberen rechten Ecke.

What surprised me the most was that the Viltrox delivers sharp images even at open aperture. Below I show an image with aperture 1.8 and a 100% crop from the top right corner.

Zum Vergleich ein 100% Crop aus der oberen rechten Ecke bei Blende 5,6.

Das Viltrox weist bei offener Blende eine recht starke Vignette auf. Diese lässt sich in der Bildbearbeitung über die automatische Objektivkorrektur auf einfache Weise beseitigen. Also mit Darktable ist das aktuell nicht so einfach. Das Objektiv ist zwar in der Datenbank vorhanden, aber nur als Sony Variante. Und weil in den Exif Daten nicht Sony steht, muss man im Modul Objektivkorrektur die Kamera auf "Generic" stellen und dann die Sony Variante des Objektivs auswählen. Ich hoffe, dass die Nikon Variante des Viltrox bald in die Datenbank aufgenommen wird.

The Viltrox has a rather strong vignette at open aperture. This can be easily removed in image processing using the automatic lens correction. This is not so easy with Darktable at the moment. The lens is in the database, but only as a Sony variant. And because the Exif data does not say Sony, you have to set the camera to "Generic" in the Lens Correction module and then select the Sony version of the lens. I hope that the Nikon version of the Viltrox will soon be added to the database.

Conclusion

Auch wenn ich das Objektiv nicht für die Infrarotfotografie angeschafft habe, schadet es natürlich nichts, wenn das gut funktioniert. Ich war selten von einem Stück Technik so begeistert, wie von diesem Objektiv. Und das liegt nicht nur an den geringen Erwartungen, die ich vor dem Kauf hatte. Bisher konnte ich keinen einzigen Kritikpunkt ausmachen. Ganz im Gegenteil. Einiges hätte ich nicht erwartet, beispielsweise, dass sich die Blende auch während der Belichtung verstellen lässt oder die Ergebnisse mit infrarotem Licht gut sind.

Even though I didn't buy the lens for infrared photography, it doesn't hurt if it works well. I have rarely been as enthusiastic about a piece of technology as I am about this lens. And this is not only due to the low expectations I had before buying it. So far, I haven't been able to find a single point of criticism. Quite the opposite. I didn't expect some things, for example that the aperture can also be adjusted during the exposure or that the results with infrared light are good.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
