I thought with some reservations about participating in this #HiveBookClub call for comments on the book that best captures unconventional loves. There will be many candidates out there. But, it seems reckless to point out a specific one, more so when it implies having read too much or being a good connoisseur of this theme within the literature. I admit to lacking such competence. For example, in the Iliad, the tragedy that interrupted the filial love between Achilles and Patroclus (who fell dead at the hands of the Trojan prince Hector), unleashed an unusual rage that tipped the victory in favor of the Greeks. Some critics have speculated about the nature of the love between the two heroes, one that transcends the eminently fraternal, yes, homosexual type, and that would justify Achilles' fury to avenge his beloved. Tell me, does it seem unconventional to you? If these critics are right, it certainly is. Now, to claim that the Iliad is the ultimate work about unconventional loves, seems unfounded, at least to me, at this time. In any case, there are loves (among literature) of conventional appearance, beyond the carnal. In this sense, today, when Valentine's Day is celebrated, I would like to comment on one of those stories, aimed at children, which requires the obligatory and wise guidance of adults, preferably parents. I am referring to the story by Roald Dahl, entitled Esio Trot, and masterfully illustrated by Quentin Blake. Who is Mr. Roald Dalh? Well, perhaps, you will remember Matilda, the girl scorned by her parents, who developed extraordinary powers to fight the sour headmistress of a school, as you will also recognize Charly and the Chocolate Factory, whose main character was played by the famous Johnny Depp. Both are film adaptations of the works of Dahl's fervent imagination, which achieved acceptance and great success on the big screen, respectively. So, with these two references, I think I exemplify for you the quality of the storyteller alone. Back to Esio Trot, I won't give you much information. You know, minimum, of spoilers, not because it shows scandalous and explicit paragraphs, injurious to children and those of Puritan minds. But because of its brevity: 54 pages (helped by the great illustrations).

You will say to me: So if this is so, where is the unconventional in love? Ah, in the way love is pursued! I'm going to give you a little brushstroke of the gist of the story. A love triangle, developed on the balconies of a building, between Mr. Hoppy (a retired, flower-loving man), Mrs. Silver (the widowed neighbor, who lives below Mr. Hoppy's apartment), and Alfie (Mrs. Silver's little turtle). In the course of the story, although it combines elements of humor, tenderness, and a touch of fantasy, typical of children's literature, it also exposes unethical and unworthy tricks to educate children and proposes the conquest of love through lies (the end justifies the means). You will tell me, if a love like that, does it classify as conventional and lasting? Nevertheless, I still believe that it could be a salvageable and even recommendable reading, if only under the guidance of an adult with solid moral and ethical values, capable of satisfying the curiosity of children. In literary terms, nothing to object to. With a simple structure to follow, a direct and well-paced style, characters that tune in with the reader, and good handling of the relationship between love and jealousy, it establishes the magic in every day to lead to the resolution of the conflict. Satisfactory? Depends on the reader's ethical perspective... As usual, I will share with you a brief reference for the translator. In this case, Mr. Miguel Sáenz Sagaseta de Ilúrdoz, a Spanish academic born in Morocco in 1932, with an extensive career in the translation of German and English literature into Spanish. He has received several important awards, including the Goethe Medal and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts of Spain. He is a member of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), occupying chair “B”. Esio Trot, perhaps it is not the narrative that best represents the unconventionality of love, but after reading it, I would certainly not follow Mr. Hoppy's path, no matter how pragmatic and effective its results are. Pensé con cierta reserva en participar en esta convocatoria de #HiveBookClub sobre comentar el libro que captura mejor los amores poco convencionales. De seguro, habrá muchos candidatos por allí. Pero, me parece temerario señalar uno en específico, más cuando implica haber leído en demasía, o ser un buen conocedor de esta temática dentro de la literatura. Reconozco carecer de tal competencia. Claro, si se indaga en extenso, hallamos historias de amores poco convencionales insertas en grandes obras literarias, por ejemplo, en la Ilíada, la tragedia que interrumpió el amor filiar entre Aquiles y Patroclo (quien cayó muerto en manos del príncipe troyano Héctor), desató una rabia inusitada que inclinó la victoria en favor de los griegos. Algunos críticos han especulado sobre la naturaleza del amor entre ambos héroes, uno que transciende lo eminentemente fraternal, sí, de tipo homosexual, y que justificaría la furia de Aquiles por vengar a su amado. Dígame, ¿le parece poco convencional? Si estos críticos tienen razón, lo es sin duda. Ahora, afirmar que la Ilíada es la máxima obra sobre amores poco convencionales, me parece sin fundamento, al menos para mí, en estos momentos. En todo caso, hay amores (entre la literatura) de apariencia convencional, más allá de lo carnal. En tal sentido, hoy, cuando se celebra el día de San Valentín, quiero comentarle uno de esos cuentos, dirigido al público infantil, que requiere la obligada y sabia guía de los adultos, preferiblemente, de los padres. Me refiero al cuento de Roald Dahl, titulado Agu Trot (Esio Trot, en inglés), e ilustrado magistralmente por Quentin Blake. ¿Quién es el señor Roald Dalh? Bueno, quizás, recordarás a Matilda, la niña menospreciada por sus padres, quien desarrolló poderes extraordinarios para combatir a la agria directora de un colegio, como también reconocerás a Charly, y la fábrica de chocolate, y cuyo protagonista fue interpretado por el afamado Johnny Depp. Ambas son adaptaciones cinematográficas de las obras de la ferviente imaginación de Dahl, que alcanzaron aceptación y un gran éxito en la pantalla grande, respectivamente. Así que, con estas dos referencias, creo ejemplificarte sobre la calidad del cuentista por sí sola. De vuelta a Agu Trot, no te daré mucha información. Ya saben, mínimo, de espóileres, no porque muestre párrafos escandalosos y explícitos, lesivos para los niños y para los de mentes puritanas. Si no por lo breve del mismo: 54 páginas (ayudado por las geniales ilustraciones).

Me dirás: Entonces, si esto es así, ¿dónde está lo poco convencional en el amor? ¡Ah, en el modo en que se persigue el amor! Voy a darle una pequeña pincelada del meollo del cuento. Un triángulo amoroso, desarrollado en los balcones de un edificio, entre el señor Hoppy (un jubilado y amante de las flores), la señora Silver (la vecina viuda, quien vive debajo del apartamento del señor Hoppy), y Alfie (la pequeña tortuga de la señora Silver). En el devenir de la historia, aunque combina elementos de humor, ternura y un toque de fantasía, propia de la literatura infantil, también expone artimañas de por sí poco éticas y dignas para educar a los niños, y que propone la conquista del amor a través de la mentira (el fin justifica los medios). Me dirás, ¿si un amor así, clasifica en lo convencional y perdurable? No obstante, aún creo que pudiera ser una lectura rescatable y hasta recomendable, si solo sí, está bajo la guía de un adulto con sólidos valores morales y éticos, capaz de satisfacer la curiosidad de los niños. En lo literario, nada que objetar. Con una estructura simple de seguir, un estilo directo y con buen ritmo, con personajes que sintonizan con el lector, buen manejo de la relación entre el amor y los celos, establece la magia en lo cotidiano para desembocar en la resolución del conflicto. ¿Satisfactorio? Depende de la perspectiva ética del lector… Como de costumbre, le compartiré una breve referencia del traductor. En este caso, el señor Miguel Sáenz Sagaseta de Ilúrdoz, académico español nacido en Marruecos en 1932, con una amplia carrera en la traducción al español de la literatura alemana e inglesa. Ha recibido varios premios importantes, entre los cuales están la Medalla Goethe y la Orden del Mérito de la República Federal de Alemania, y la medalla de oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes de España. Es miembro de la Real Academia Española (RAE), ocupando el sillón “B”. Agu Trot, quizás no sea la narrativa que mejor representa lo poco convencional en el amor, pero después de leerla, de seguro, yo, por muy pragmático y efectivo de sus resultados, no seguiría el camino del señor Hoppy, para mí, nada convencional.
