Käfig aus Gold

Regungslos saß ich da. Ich wartete. Ich starrte auf die Uhr meines Handys bis die Anzeige von einuhrsiebenundvierzig auf einuhrachtungvierzig sprang. Doch nichts geschah. Keine neuen Nachrichten auf WhatsApp, Instagram oder Snapchat. Ich zögerte, öffnete mein Laptop und wollte mich zwischen Netflix und YouTube entscheiden. Doch unter den vielen Videos und Serien schien irgendwie alles gleich. Ich nahm die letzte Zigarette aus der Schachtel, ging zum Fenster und schaute hinaus in die ruhige Nacht. Ich fragte mich, auf was ich wartete. Und vor allem, wann es endlich so weit war. Ich zündete die Zigarette an. Einen Atemzug lang wusste ich was ich brauchte. Das Nikotin strömte durch meine Lungen in mein Blut. Dieser kurzen Augenblick an Befriedigung wich einem Gefühl des Ekels. Gekonnt schnippte ich die brennende Zigarette in die Dunkelheit. Das war nun wirklich die Letzte. Ich erkannte, dass ich auf etwas wartete, was nie kommen wird. Ich musste es selbst in die Hand nehmen. Ab sofort werde ich mein Leben selbst bestimmen. Ich wollte nicht weiter ein Spielball des Lebens sein. Ich stellte mir zwei Tischtennisspieler vor, wie sie den Ball im Rhythmus wieder und wieder im Spiel hielten. Doch war ich der Ball. Nun war sicher der Punkt gekommen, auf den ich so lange gewartet hatte. Ab morgen werde ich als neuer Mensch erwachen und mir meine eigene Welt aus dem Boden stampfen. Ich putzte die Zähne und ging ins Bett. Voller Aufregung wälzte ich mich von einer auf die andere Seite und schlief schließlich voller Tatendrang ein.

Am nächsten Morgen wachte ich verschlafen auf und blinkte auf mein Handy. Es war zehn nach zwölf. Ich stand auf, zog meinen Bademantel an und ging zur Kommode. Ich kramte aus der untersten Schublade ein altes Päckchen Zigaretten hervor. Ich ging ans Fenster, zündete mir eine Zigarette an und betrachtete die vielen Menschen auf der Straße, wie sie unter der Mittagssonne zielstrebig aneinander vorbei huschten.

Golden Cage

I sat there motionless. I waited. I stared at the clock of my mobile phone until the display of one-forty-seven jumped to one-forty-eight. But nothing happened. No new messages on WhatsApp, Instagram, or Snapchat. I hesitated, opened my laptop and wanted to choose between Netflix and YouTube. But among the many videos and series, everything seemed the same. I took the last cigarette out of the box, went to the window and looked out into the quiet night. I wondered what I was waiting for. And especially when it was time. I lit the cigarette. For one breath I knew what I needed. The nicotine streamed into my blood through my lungs. This brief moment of satisfaction gave way to a feeling of disgust. I flipped the burning cigarette into the dark. This was really the last. I realized I was waiting for something that would never come. I had to take it myself. From now on I will determine my life myself. I did not want to be a game of life. I imagined two table tennis players holding the ball again and again in the game. But I was the ball. The point I had been waiting for so long had certainly come. From tomorrow I will wake up as a new person and stamp my own world out of the ground. I brushed my teeth and went to bed. Full of excitement, I rolled from one side to the other and finally fell asleep.

The next morning, I woke up sleepy and blinked on my phone. It was ten past twelve. I got up, put on my bathrobe and went to the dresser. I pulled out an old packet of cigarettes from the bottom drawer. I went to the window, lit a cigarette, and looked at the many people on the street, circling under the midday sun.
