If you want to share your adventures and your cool experiences you need to get out there. That's what I did for a few weeks and now I am back at my desk looking through what could be interesting to you guys. Now I can share what I was up to. For the past weeks, I have been traveling throughout California. The trip was booked way back last year and we were a bit uncertain how it would go. Having friends there is a huge help and boost in confidence and gives you that cool Anker to start from. All in all, it was again a super nice trip. For this part towards the end, I have to thank Ingrid and Foss. Ingrid was coming from Tucson and asked me if I would like to join in for some nights in Joshua Tree National Park. She was a tiny bit pushy and that's exactly what I needed. I rerouted a few things and also wrote Foss if he is around ..... who happens to live in >>> tada in Joshua Tree. So that actually worked out super well. We met in Joshua and explored a few locations. Here I share Ingrid's favorite. Also, I hope she joins the Hive Mind and shares her Tornado & Flower chasing and shots. She goes to places many only dream of. Anyhow let's get started here.

Wer seine Erlebnisse und Abenteuer teilen möchte, muss rausgehen. Genau das habe ich die letzten Wochen getan, und nun sitze ich wieder an meinem Schreibtisch und schaue mal durch was für euch dabei ist. Hier ist mal wieder ein Einblick, was ich so erlebt habe. Die letzten Wochen war in im süden von Kalifornien. Die Reise war schon letztes Jahr gebucht, und wir waren etwas unsicher, wie es laufen würde. Ich bin in der glücklichen Lage dort auch echte Freunde zu haben, ist eine große Hilfe und gibt Selbstvertrauen. Alles in allem war es wieder eine super coole Reise. Für den Teil am Ende muss ich Ingrid und Foss danken. Ingrid kam aus Tucson und fragte mich, ob ich Lust hätte, ein paar Nächte im Joshua Tree Nationalpark zu verbringen. Logisch mit Light Painting. Sie war ein bisschen pushi, und genau das brauchte ich. Ich habe ein paar Dinge umgeplant und auch Foss angeschrieben … der zufällig in >>> tada in Joshua Tree wohnt. Das hat also wirklich super geklappt. Wir haben uns in Joshua getroffen und ein paar coole Locations besucht. Hier gibts Ingrids Favorit. Außerdem hoffe ich, dass sie sich dem Hive Mind anschließt und ihre Tornado- und Blumenjagden sowie ihre Fotos auch mit euch teilt. Fangen wir mal hier an.

Joshua Tree National Park, located in southern California where the Mojave and Colorado deserts meet, is a prime destination for landscape and nature photographers. Named after the unusual, twisted Joshua trees (a type of yucca), the park offers surreal desert landscapes, dramatic rock formations, and exceptional lighting conditions. Although the spots that I visited seem to have some Light Pollution coming in from Palm Springs. As told this is not getting less. What you see is what you get: Iconic Trees: The unique silhouette of the Joshua tree is best captured at sunrise or sunset when low light casts long shadows and emphasizes textures. Rock Formations: Locations like Skull Rock, Arch Rock, and Cap Rock offer compelling foregrounds and abstract compositions. These sites are easily accessible from main roads. Astrophotography: The park is a designated Dark Sky Park. On clear nights, the Milky Way is visible with minimal light pollution, especially in the northern sections like Hidden Valley or Keys View.

Im Süden Kaliforniens, genau dort, wo Mojave- und Colorado-Wüste aufeinandertreffen, liegt Joshua Tree National Park – ein Paradies für Landschafts- und Naturfotografen. Benannt nach den skurrilen, verkrüppelten Joshua Trees (eine Yucca-Art), liefert der Park eine fast surreale Kulisse: trockene Wüstenlandschaften, bizarre Felsformationen und Lichtverhältnisse, die man so nur selten findet. Obwohl Palm Springs kommt langsam näher auch mit Lichtverschmutzung > ergo Abstand halten!. What you see is what you get: Ikonische Bäume: Die markante Silhouetten der Joshua Trees wirkt besonden so weltfremd. Felsen und Formen: Spots wie Skull Rock, Arch Rock oder Cap Rock sind super zugänglich und liefern spannende Vordergründe – ideal für kreative Bildkompositionen oder Minimalismus mit Weitwinkel. Astro pur: Der Park ist offiziell ein „Dark Sky Park“. Heißt: Null Lichtverschmutzung. Gerade im Norden – Hidden Valley oder Keys View – sieht man bei klarer Nacht die Milchstraße gestochen scharf. Kamera aufs Stativ, ISO hoch, und los geht’s.

Here you see one of the great moments of Location Scouting. This was such a cool spot, except for the trailers and RV's right behind the camera. So this looked cool but was most likely out of the question for a night sky or Milky Way shot with Light Painting. Looking goog!

Hier seht ihr so 'einen' DER Momente beim Location Scouting. Das war ein wirklich cooler Ort, abgesehen von den Wohnwagen direkt hinter der Kamera. Das sah zwar cool aus, kam aber für eine Aufnahme des Nachthimmels oder der Milchstraße mit Light Painting höchstwahrscheinlich nicht in Frage.

The spot we chose is close to the parking and campground at Jumbo Rocks. The rock we had in mind wasn't as big or dominant in the scene but with that ancient juniper in front of it, it has become iconic. You know how much I love trees so it was easy to say yes to that spot. We expected the Milky Way to show up in the night sky behind it around 1:30 Am - 2 PM. That was a looong way ahead. So we started playing around towards the right moment. We got that as you'll see down below.

Unser Spot für diese Nacht liegt in der Nähe des Parkplatzes und Campingplatzes bei Jumbo Rocks. Der Felsen, den wir im Sinn hatten, war jetzt nicht speziell gewaltig oder dominant in der Szene, aber mit dem uralten Wacholder davor ist er zu einer kleinen Ikone geworden. Ihr wisst ja, wie cool ich Bäume finde, also YES to that tree. Wir erwarteten, dass die Milchstraße zwischen 1:30 und 2:00 Uhr Morgens am Nachthimmel hinter dem Felsen auftauchen würde. Das war noch seeehr lang hin. Also Faxen bis es so weit ist.

The smallest variations can change everything. Especially when you want two cameras on a similar spot. Yeah, that's not going to work here. So we decided on the different shots we wanted. Foss started exploring the surroundings and I took the chance. Caught him on camera!

Kleinste Abweichungen können alles verändern. Besonders, wenn man zwei Kameras an etwa dem gleich Ort haben möchte. Ja, das funktioniert hier nicht. Also nacheinander, jeder seine Shots. Foss begann auch erstmal, die Umgebung zu erkunden, und ich nutzte die Gelegenheit. I

When we arrived there was still a kind of traffic at the campground and the Light Pollution wasn't all helpful We were hoping for it to slow down once all here go to sleep. 2 AM they should right? He was runnin around I let the camera run.

Als wir ankamen, herrschte auf dem Campingplatz noch immer reger Verkehr und die Lichtverschmutzung war nicht gerade hilfreich. Wir hofften, dass das Störlicht später nachlassen würde, wenn alle hier schlafen gehen. Um 2 Uhr morgens sollte es doch so weit sein, oder?

Without much doing you'll get a composition that is so rewarding. All i can say is: I do love the lines and how it all adds up. Can't wait for the Milky Way.

Ohne viel Aufwand entsteht eine Komposition, die wirklich lohnend ist. Ich liebe die Linien und wie sich alles zusammenfügt. Ich kann es kaum erwarten, die Milchstraße zu sehen.

As the blue hour was in full swing I started to play around with the composition and tested the light conditions in general and my of course my flashlight and tools. Problem? Some campers had that huge light that cast a light and a harsh shadow on the rock. Not cool but later they went to sleep. Here I tried to use my flashlight to balance the light on the rock. Not perfect but pretty cool. The light I shed directly into the camera through the bush wasnt intentional but hey cool feature. 😎

Als die blaue Stunde in vollem Gange war, begann ich mit der Komposition zu experimentieren und das Licht und meine Lampen zu testen. Einige Camper hatten diese riesige Lampe, die Licht und einen harten Schatten auf den Felsen warf. Nicht cool, aber später schliefen sie ein. Hier versuchte ich, mit meiner Taschenlampe das Licht auf dem Felsen auszugleichen. Nicht perfekt, aber ziemlich cool. Kleiner Fehler: Ja leider hab ich kurz in die Kamera geleuchtet, daher der kleine Spot im Busch. 😎

Testing what goes is not always a success story. Here that idea i had did not show results as hoped. Anyhow fun to share with you. With a little more thought I think I could have done a better job here, but that shot was not the reason to be here in the first place. We wanted Milky Way! So I did not go further with the concept.

Rumspielen ist nicht immer ein erfolgreich. Hier ist mal ne Idee die nicht die erhofften Ergebnisse gebrachte. Trotzdem cool, sie mal mit euch zu teilen. Mit etwas mehr Energie, hätte ich es hier sicher besseres hinbekommen, aber diese Aufnahme war nicht der Grund warum wir hier waren. Deshalb habe ich das Konzept nicht weiter verfolgt.

But I came here to have at least one shot that has a recognizable Light Painting feature. So I wanted a shape to compliment the rock. That avenue was also not successful at that moment. Today I would have some 10-15 things in mind, but there I was not in the space. Let's wait for the Milkyway .. Tick-Tock time goes slow when you are the impatient one.

Ich wollte wenigstens eine Aufnahme mit einem erkennbaren LightPainting-Element. Ich wollte also eine Form, die den Felsen ergänzt. Ja ne, dass klappte nicht - Das war nicht erfolgreich. Heute hätte ich 10-15 Dinge im Kopf, aber da war ich nicht im richtigen Moment. Warten wir auf die Milchstraße! Tick-Tock, die Zeit vergeht langsam, wenn man ungeduldig ist.

When the bush became the base for the Juniper. At first, I rotated the camera around the center of the rock base but It was much cooler when I changed my attention a little off-center. He He Love it!

Als der Busch zur Basis für den Wacholder wurde. Zuerst drehte ich die Camera um die Mitte des Felssockels, aber es war viel cooler, als ich meinen Blick etwas außerhalb der Mitte richtete. He, he, Coolio!

Here is the shot we waited for. The shadow cast on the rock worked at least from one side. That was created by casting light through the bush and lighting it up at the same time. All that is done at F11 and the roll down to F2.8 to get the Milky Way. All during the same exposure as i always aim for. That's the trick. That way it does not really matter how bright your flashlight is and as a bonus you'll get all the stars of the night. Super Easy when you use a manual lens like my Laowa 12mm F2.8 Zero D.

Hier ist die Aufnahme, auf die wir gewartet haben. Der Schattenwurf auf dem Felsen funktionierte zumindest von einer Seite. Dieser entstand, indem ich das Licht durch den Busch leuchtete. Das Ganze erst bei Blende 11 und anschließendem Herunterfahren auf Blende 2,8, um die Milchstraße für 15-20s einzufangen. Alles während der gleichen Belichtung. So spielt es keine Rolle, wie hell die Taschenlampe ist und man bekommt noch die Sterne. Super einfach mit einem manuellen Objektiv wie meinem Laowa 12mm F2,8 Zero D.

Yes I said when I got that one. The light on the tree wasn't overpowering the scene and the shadow on the rock worked so nicely. It still makes it look like a night shot and not a photo montage. Adding that infinity sign was a bit of a tricky one. It did take me longer than normal to find the right spot size and angle to place the infinity sign. Not perfect but I did like it like that. All in all 56 seconds at F16 first and the last 20 seconds with an open lens at F2.8. That was the last shot of the night and here for you to enjoy in that extended post. 'YES' kam da raus, als ich das Foto dann sah. Das Licht auf dem Baum überstrahlte die Szene nicht, und der Schatten auf dem Felsen wirkte wie ich wollte. Es sieht immer auch immer noch wie eine Nachtaufnahme aus und nicht wie eine Fotomontage. Das Unendlichkeitszeichen hinzuzufügen war etwas knifflig. Dafür hats auch etwas länger als sonst gebraucht, um die richtige Stelle, Größe und den richtigen Winkel für das Unendlichkeitszeichen zu finden. Nicht perfekt, aber so hat es mir gefallen. Insgesamt 56 Sekunden bei Blende 16 und die letzten 20 Sekunden mit offenem Objektiv bei Blende 2,8. Das war dann aber auch die letzte Aufnahme der Nacht .
