If anyone has seen some of what I've written recently, you'll notice I can't write two sentences without trying to shoehorn "YAKUZA" into one of them. It's a way of life; it's my current favorite franchise, and honestly, I'm in love with everything I've played. It's like my second Kingdom Hearts era, and just as Kingdom Hearts deserved its moment, I'd like to dedicate my time to talking about what is probably the most underrated video game franchise—or at least, that's what it's proven to be for me. Yakuza has been around since the PS2 era. These are games that have maintained a relatively low profile for years, but those who have tried them have stuck around for everything they offer. You could say its global success truly began with Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the franchise's soft reboot that changes the protagonist, introduces a new story with new characters, and even shifts the gameplay style. However, I don't want to make this too confusing, so I'll go in order. Yakuza has many games, but I'll divide them into "eras" to make things simpler. Let me remind you that everything here is based on my knowledge and opinion, feel free to share your own if you'd like!

ERA DE KIRYU

The place where it all began: the legendary Yakuza, the Dragon of Dojima, Kazuma Kiryu. He is the protagonist of this franchise or at least the first of several to follow, but without a doubt, the most well-known, alongside Ichiban, who we’ll talk about later. The first two Yakuza games were released for the PS2, laying the foundation for what would come next. With a beat 'em up gameplay style and RPG elements to gain experience and level up, alongside the presence of minigames and side missions, the influence of Shenmue is undeniable. However, Yakuza quickly carved out its own identity over time. These games feel a bit clunky by today’s standards, but I’ve played them, and if you’re used to games from that era or earlier, they really shouldn’t pose a problem for you. If that’s not the case, both titles have remakes: Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2. These remakes bring both games back and expand upon them (with a few quirks here and there), improving gameplay, graphics, and adding more story to better align with other entries in the series.

We then move on to Yakuza 3, 4, and 5. I group these three together because there’s really no reason not to play them one after the other if you're just interested in the mainline games. All of them were initially released for the PS3 and later came to other platforms with remasters, including PC, which is where I’m playing them. This is where things start to get tricky, especially when it comes to the playing order. Yakuza 0 is considered by many to be the best game in the franchise to this day. It’s where a lot of people begin, though that wasn’t the case for me. It’s a prequel that takes place before the first game but was released after Yakuza 5, sparking debates about the best way to approach it. However, we’ll talk about the order later. For now, I just want to clarify that if you want to jump straight to the point and play what is PROBABLY the best and most accessible Yakuza experience for newcomers to the saga, Yakuza 0 is an excellent starting point. Lastly, there’s Yakuza 6. I can’t say much about this one, but it represents the conclusion of Kiryu’s era. It ties together all the games I’ve mentioned so far and is definitely something you shouldn’t play until the end if you care about understanding all (or at least most) of the story’s details. ICHIBAN ERA

This game marks a new starting point for the franchise. I won’t delve into the story here, but I can tell you that Yakuza transitions from a beat 'em up to a JRPG. If you enjoy this genre, it might become your favorite. It is also considered one of the best alongside Yakuza 0, thanks to Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s dedication to crafting excellent entry points into the franchise. Between Yakuza 6 and 7, there’s Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, a game you should play after 7 but before 8. It serves as a kind of introduction to elements you’ll encounter in the next game I’ll discuss. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the latest main entry in the franchise, released just last year. It’s likely the biggest and most ambitious Yakuza game to date. It’s DEFINITELY the last one you should play, as it takes the systems from Yakuza 7 to their peak. This game will be followed by Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza, which is set to release in almost exactly a month. The mix of Yakuzas, pirates, and naval battles makes me wonder what on earth Yakuza is really about, haha.

These include Kurohyou 1 and 2, which were never released outside Japan, Yakuza Kenzan, which met the same fate, and Yakuza Dead Souls, which, depending on whom you ask, is either the best or worst Yakuza game. Then there’s Like a Dragon Ishin!, which received a remake in Unreal Engine and was brought to the West. This game is set in feudal Japan, so you can play it whenever you like—it doesn’t really matter. Finally, we have what are probably the most important spin-offs: Judgment and Lost Judgment. These shift from Yakuza-related plots to a police thriller. You could use them as a way to enter the franchise, with one caveat. You can play Judgment first, but Lost Judgment contains a spoiler from the story of Yakuza 7, so at a minimum, you should play that one afterward if you care about what might happen. That’s essentially everything. I’d like to remind you that I’m currently halfway through the series. I’ve been playing in release order, starting with the first Yakuza up to Yakuza 0 and Kiwami. My plan is to play Kiwami 2, then Yakuza 6, and finally move on to Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Based on that, I’ll share my thoughts on what I think is the best way to approach Yakuza depending on what you’re looking for and your preferred style of gaming.

1 - Chronological This is how I was recommended to play my Yakuza and I feel this is the method that can work for the vast majority as it is the easiest to understand, it just has a small but that some might not like. You simply start with Yakuza 0, then play Yakuza Kiwami, Kiwami 2, Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4, Yakuza 5, Yakuza 6, Yakuza 7 (Like a Dragon), Like a Dragon Gaiden, and Yakuza 8 (Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth), it's the most direct way and without worrying about which one goes before and which one goes after, the only problem with this method is that you will notice a dip in Yakuza 3, it's not a bad game, but inevitably going from Kiwami 2 to a game that came out a decade earlier is noticeable, the same could happen with Yakuza 4 and 5 to a lesser extent, as each one improves its gameplay and fluidity compared to the previous one, and that brings me to the next method.

2 - Release order There are two reasons why I didn't want to start with Yakuza 0, one was the fanservice and winks for those who had already played the previous games, and the other is because I wanted to see the mechanical evolution of the franchise from its beginnings, I have no problem with games that are a bit clunky, so I started with the original Yakuza from the PS2, then Yakuza 2 from the PS2, and there when I made the jump to Yakuza 3 it was a whole new world, the generation jump is noticeable and the improvements as well, it became one of my favorites, then I just played Yakuza 4 and 5, and it was here when I played 0, and I think the 100 hours I put into it speaks to how much I liked the game. For me seeing how Yakuza has grown over the years has been a priceless experience, and seeing the changes that are made over the years to the mechanics and how everything improves fills me as much as enjoying the story in the order it was originally told.

This is already optional, but I'm playing Kiwami and Kiwami 2 before moving on to Yakuza 6 because I'm interested in seeing, again, how both games evolved in their remakes, and I can tell you that playing this way I'm very pleased and I've enjoyed it like a little girl, if I had to play them again I would do it the same way, but I understand that Yakuza 1 and 2 may not please everyone, so if you are still interested in playing by release and not by chronology, you can play Kiwami and Kiwami 2 and then jump to 3. 3 - THE ICHIBAN WAY For whatever reason maybe you might not be so interested in the Beat em' up part of Yakuza, maybe you like JRPGs more or you just really like Yakuza Like a Dragon and want to start with the Ichiban games, in this case Yakuza 7 is an option just as valid as the others, as always, with its buts. Yakuza 7 is a story with many new characters, but as always there will be details that you may not detect if you did not play the Kiryu games, which becomes almost mandatory if you want to play LIke a Dragon: Infinite Wealth later, so while Yakuza 7 is a good starting point, it is with the way that more details you could miss, if you do not care so much about the story and just want a good JRPG with minigames, this is your route without a doubt.

And that would be all, in summary these are the 4 most viable ways to play Yakuza, you can always play the one you want, but these would be the most recommended to better enjoy the games based on what you want or what you are looking for, I have nothing left to say but to recommend once again to give the franchise a chance, they have good stories, very well written characters, and most importantly, they are very fun to play. ERA DE KIRYU

Los primeros dos juegos de Yakuza salieron para la PS2, sentando las bases de lo que vendría después, con jugabilidad Beat em’ up y elementos RPG para ganar experiencia y subir de nivel, presencia de minijuegos y misiones secundarias, la influencia de Shenmue es innegable, y vaya que supo asumir su propia identidad con el tiempo, son juegos un poco toscos para la actualidad, pero personalmente los jugué y si estás acostumbrado a los juegos de esa época de previos, realmente no deberían representar un problema para ti, pero si ese es el caso ambos tienen remakes, Yakuza Kiwami y Yakuza Kiwami 2, respectivamente, ambos traen de vuelta y expanden ambos juegos (con un par de peros aquí y allá), mejorando su jugabilidad, gráficos, y añadiendo más historia para que todo encaje mejor con otros juegos.

Continuamos con Yakuza 3, 4 y 5, junto estos dos porque realmente no hay motivo para no jugarlos uno detrás del otro si solo te interesan los juegos principales, todos son de PS3 y salieron luego en plataformas posteriores con remasters, incluída PC que es donde los estoy jugando, es aquí donde empiezan los problemas realmente (en cuanto a orden se refiere). Entre Yakuza 6 y 7 está Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased his name, un juego que deberías jugar después del 7 pero antes del 8, pues es una especie de introducción a cosas que verás en el siguiente juego del que hablaré. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth es la última entrega principal de la franquicia, lanzado apenas el año pasado es probablemente el Yakuza más grande y ambicioso hasta la fecha, es DEFINITIVAMENTE el último que deberías jugar pues eleva los sistemas de Yakuza 7 a su máximo esplendor, este juego será continuado por Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza, el cual se lanza en casi exactamente un mes, solo puedo decir que la mezcla de Yakuzas, piratas y peleas navales me hace plantearme de qué mierda trata Yakuza en realidad haha.

1 - Cronología Así me recomendaron jugar a mi Yakuza y siento que es el método que puede funcionar para la gran mayoría pues es el más sencillo de entender, solo tiene un pequeño pero que podría no gustar a algunos. Simplemente empiezas con Yakuza 0, luego juegas Yakuza Kiwami, Kiwami 2, Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4, Yakuza 5, Yakuza 6, Yakuza 7 (LIke a Dragon), Like a Dragon Gaiden, y Yakuza 8 (Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth), es la forma más directa y sin preocuparte por cuál va antes y cuál va después, el único problema con este método es que notarás un bajón en el Yakuza 3, no es un mal juego, pero de forma inevitable pasar de Kiwami 2 a un juego que salió una década antes se nota, podría pasarte lo mismo con Yakuza 4 y 5 en menor medida, pues cada uno mejora su gameplay y fluidez en comparación al anterior, y eso me lleva al siguiente método.

2 - Fecha de lanzamiento Hay dos razones por las cuales no quería empezar por Yakuza 0, una era el fanservice y los guiños para quienes ya hubieran jugado los juegos anteriores, y la otra es porque yo quería ver la evolución mecánica de la franquicia desde sus inicios, no tengo problema con los juegos que son un poco toscos, así que empecé por el Yakuza original de la PS2, luego Yakuza 2 de la PS2, y ahí cuando di el salto a Yakuza 3 fue un mundo nuevo, el salto generacional se nota y las mejoras también, se convirtió en uno de mis favoritos, luego simplemente jugué Yakuza 4 y 5, y fue aquí cuando jugué el 0, y creo que las 100 horas que le invertí hablan de lo mucho que me gustó el juego. Para mi ver como creció Yakuza con los años ha sido una experiencia invaluable, y ver los cambios que van haciendo con los años a las mecánicas y como todo mejora me llena tanto como disfrutar la historia en el orden que fue contada originalmente.

Esto ya es opcional, pero yo antes de pasar a Yakuza 6 estoy jugando Kiwami y Kiwami 2 pues me interesa ver, nuevamente, como evolucionaron ambos juegos en sus remakes, y puedo decirles que jugando de esta forma estoy muy complacida y me lo he pasado como una niña pequeña, si tuviera que volverlos a jugar lo haría de la misma forma, pero entiendo que Yakuza 1 y 2 pueden no agradar a todo el mundo, así que si aún así les interesa jugar por salida y no por cronología, pueden jugar Kiwami y Kiwami 2 y luego saltar al 3. 3 - THE ICHIBAN WAY Por el motivo que sea quizás podría no interesarte tanto la parte Beat em’ up de Yakuza, quizás te gustan más los JRPG o simplemente te llama mucho la atención Yakuza Like a Dragon y quieres empezar con los juegos de Ichiban, en este caso Yakuza 7 es una opción igual de válida que las demás, como siempre, con sus peros. Yakuza 7 es una historia con muchos personajes nuevos, pero como siempre habrá detalles que quizás no detectes si no jugaste a los juegos de Kiryu, cosa que se hace casi obligatoria si quieres jugar LIke a Dragon: Infinite Wealth después, así que si bien Yakuza 7 es un buen punto de partida, es con la forma que más detalles te podrías perder, si no te importa tanto la historia y solo quieres un buen JRPG con minijuegos, esta es tu ruta sin lugar a dudas.
