Os escravos africanos trouxeram suas tradições, crenças e rituais para o nordeste brasileiro. A aculturação entre as culturas brasileira e africana misturou elementos culturais do catolicismo, espiritualismo e outras religiões que existiam na época. Essa adaptação cultural resultou no surgimento de uma religião na Bahia conhecida como Candomblé. É uma religião que venera os orixás, divindades representadas pelas forças e/ou poder da natureza. A veneração ocorre por meio de cantos, oferendas e danças específicas; em alguns casos, ocorrem sacrifícios de animais. O próprio nome orixá significa "dança", refletindo seu nome na manifestação cultural para suas divindades.

Porém, no dia 2 de fevereiro, data da Festa de Lemanjá, as pessoas vestem branco e andam em barcos com flores, ritual em que pedem a benção dos orixás para a pesca. É uma cultura muito criticada no Brasil, parte da população critica os terreiros de Candomblé, locais onde os rituais são realizados.
