Hola, mis amigos. Que placer saludarlos y presentarme una vez más en esta comunidad. Espero que todos estén bien. Hoy quiero contarles algo hermoso y mágico que me sucedió hace un tiempo.

>Era aproximadamente la una de la tarde y recién salía de mi habitual encuentro sabatino con la literatura, en el Centro de Formación Literaria Onelio Jorge Cardoso, sitio donde pasé las mejores horas de la semana y de dónde salia cargada de energía positiva y optimismo. Con la ilusión de llegar pronto a mi casa, fui hacia la parada y enseguida llego una guagua (P 5). Como era de esperar, venía llena hasta el techo pero con toda la actitud, pude subir por la puerta de atrás. Luego de tres paradas, logré acomodarme. Una señora muy amable me pidió el bolso para aliviar un poco el trayecto. A su lado estaba sentada una muchacha con un niño de unos cuatro o cinco años que no paraba de hablar y hacer preguntas. Yo lo miraba sonriente hasta que el pequeño se fijó en mi. La señora que tenía mi bolso me miró y dijo una frase clásica que es uno de los platos fuertes de estos tiempos: -Que malo está el transporte. -¿El transporte nada más? Le dije. Ambas sonreímos por no llorar. Ahí empezó una amena charla. Enseguida me di cuenta que era oriental como yo. -Soy de Guantámo- dijo -Y yo de Santiago. Ya en esta capital somos más los que vinimos de otra parte que los nativos. >Establecimos una especie de empatía y complicidad de inmediato. Le comenté que mis vecinos del frente, que son como mi familia, también eran de Guantánamo. Me dijo que no vivía aquí, que era su esposo el habanero, que no le gustaba esto, demasiada atómica la vida. Le confesé que hubieron de pasar cinco años para que yo empezara a enamorarme de la Habana, que al principio me sentía ajena y desamparada, sin amigos, pero luego conocí persona muy buenas como mi amiga Raiza, pero esa será otra historia. Mientras tanto, el pequeño niño continuaba mirándome, le había llamado la atención un collar que yo tenía puesto y que bien pudiera ser unisex. -¿Qué es eso? -preguntó -Un collar. -No, eso que le cuelga. -Un elefante que me protege- se me ocurrió decirle. Sin pensarlo y de la manera más natural y espontánea, como suelen ser los niños, me dijo: -Lo quiero. >Yo sonreí, la madre lo regañó y me pidió disculpas. Le dije que no pasaba nada, que sino hubiera sido un regalo de una amiga que emigró hace unos años se lo daba. Seguí conversado con la señora, el niño miraba insistente y de reojo el elefantico en mi cuello y empecé a dudar. Pensé que diría mi amiga si regalo algo que me dió con tanto cariño, un recuerdo de gran valor sentimental, pero los ojos de aquel niño me hicieron cambiar de idea. Me quité el collar y sus ojitos brillaron de alegría cuando lo coloqué en su cuello. La madre, apenada, no quería aceptarlo pero yo insistí. Él no paraba de sonreír y me dio las gracias, guiado por su mamá. -Ahora te va a proteger a ti ¿ Le vas a poner un nombre al elefante? Le pregunté. -Si, Sócrates Junior. Me pareció inusual que un niño mencionara el nombre de Sócrates, entonces la madre me dijo que ese era su nombre y me aclaró que era una tradición familiar, herencia de su padre y su abuelo. -Con razón es un niño tan inteligente llevando el nombre del gran filósofo griego. Le dije. Según la madre, era el menor en su aula de pre escolar, el primero en hacer las tareas y actividades que asignaba la maestra. Sin dudas un niño muy inteligente y simpático. No recuerdo todo lo que hablé con él, pero si me dijo que lo iba a cuidar mucho y me regaló una cucharita plástica y ese pequeño estuche, también plástico que se ve en sus manos. -¿Viste? Yo salí mejor que tú. Te regalé una cosa y tú me regalaste dos-le dije. > Saqué el teléfono y le tomé una foto, él posó sonriente para mí. Cuando llegó el momento de bajarse, yo ocupé su asiento y el niño no paraba de decirme adiós con su manita. Continúe mi conversación con la señora y le agradecí por llevarme el bolso, ella también se bajó primero que yo. Sin darme cuenta casi estaba llegando al lugar donde debía bajarme para seguir mi viaje. Continúe con la misma actitud de agradecimiento y enseguida vino otra guagua. Llegué a mi casa en menos de una hora, tiempo récord. En la noche le hice la historia a una amiga y sucedió algo bastante raro porque la foto que le tomé al niño no apareció en la galería del teléfono, por más que la busqué. Y mi amiga, que es muy ocurrente, me dijo: -La foto no aparece porque ese niño era un fantasma o un vampiro, no era real. Los vampiros no salen en fotos ni se reflejan en espejos. Me reí mucho de su disparate. A la mañana siguiente,cuando desperté, volví a revisar en el teléfono, y así, como por arte de magia o quizás por algún misterio de la tecnología, apareció la foto. En fin, no sé si algún día volveré a ver a Sócrates Junior, pero estoy segura de que mi amiga emigrante, que leerá esta crónica en algún momento, hubiera hecho lo mismo. Al final, no hay satisfacción más grande que hacer feliz a un niño.

>It was around one in the afternoon, and I had just left my usual Saturday literature meeting at the Onelio Jorge Cardoso Literary Training Center, a place where I spend the best hours of my week and always leave filled with positive energy and optimism. Eager to get home quickly, I headed to the bus stop, and soon a bus (P5) arrived. As expected, it was packed to the brim, but with determination, I managed to squeeze in through the back door. After three stops, I finally found a comfortable spot. A kind woman offered to hold my bag to make the ride a little easier for me. Next to her sat a young girl with a boy around four or five years old who wouldn’t stop talking and asking questions. I smiled as I watched him until the little one noticed me. The woman holding my bag looked at me and said a classic phrase that’s become all too common these days: -The transportation system is so bad. -Is it just the transportation? I replied. We both smiled to keep from crying. That’s how a pleasant conversation began. I quickly realized she was from eastern Cuba, just like me. -I’m from Guantánamo," she said. -And I’m from Santiago. At this point, there are more people in this capital who came from elsewhere than natives. >We immediately established a sense of empathy and understanding. I mentioned that my neighbors across the street, who are like family to me, were also from Guantánamo. She told me she didn’t live here—her husband was from Havana, and she didn’t like the city much, saying life here was too hectic. I don’t remember everything we talked about, but he did tell me he would take good care of the necklace and gave me a little plastic spoon and a small plastic case, like the one you see in his hands. -See? I came out better than you. I gave you one thing, and you gave me two, I said. >I took out my phone and snapped a picture of him. He smiled and posed for me. When it was time for them to get off, I took his seat, and the little boy kept waving goodbye with his tiny hand. I continued talking with the woman and thanked her for holding my bag. I laughed hard at her nonsense. The next morning, when I woke up, I checked my phone again, and as if by magic or some technological mystery, the photo had appeared. Anyway, I don’t know if I’ll ever see Socrates Junior again, but I’m sure my emigrant friend, who will read this story someday, would have done the same. In the end, there’s no greater satisfaction than making a child happy.
