El mes de abril se viste de azul en honor a nuestros ángeles con autismo y como una mamá azul no podía dejar pasar la oportunidad de decir presente en este bello concurso que promueve esta comunidad. A mi vida llegó el autismo hace 11 años con el nacimiento de mi segundo hijo, al principio no sabía que sería diferente por con el pasar del tiempo llegó el Diagnóstico cuando mi niño apenas tenía dos años de edad.

The month of April dresses in blue in honor of our angels with autism and as a blue mom I could not miss the opportunity to be present in this beautiful contest promoted by this community. Autism came into my life 11 years ago with the birth of my second son, at the beginning I did not know he would be different, but with the passing of time the diagnosis came when my child was only two years old.

Yo había escuchado anteriormente de esta condición de vida pero no había tenido la oportunidad de tratar directamente con una persona con autismo por lo que cuando mi hijo es diagnosticado comienza un choque emocional en mi cerebro puesto que no sabía cómo ayudarlo, no tenía ni la más mínima idea de cómo sería la vida de mi familia de ahora en adelante.

I had previously heard of this life condition but had not had the opportunity to deal directly with a person with autism so when my son is diagnosed it starts an emotional shock in my brain since I did not know how to help him, I had no idea what my family's life would be like from now on.

La convivencia en casa cambió por completo ya que había que adecuarse a las restricciones alimentarias, también debíamos tener cuidado con todo aquello que pudiese ser peligroso para el niño. Al principio fue difícil puesto que fue un cambio demasiado brusco para toda la familia pero el amor por nuestros hijos nos lleva hacer todo cuanto sea posible por su bienestar.

Living together at home changed completely since we had to adapt to the food restrictions, and we also had to be careful with anything that could be dangerous for the child. At first it was difficult because it was a very sudden change for the whole family, but our love for our children led us to do everything possible for their well-being.

Nos convertimos en una familia donde la precaución es primordial, en mi casa no es fácil conseguir un cuchillo, una navaja o una tijera, los artículos de limpieza están bien resguardados y todo aquello que no sea comestible o que puedo ocasionarle algún daño a mi hijo debe estar guardado en un sitio donde el niño no pueda tener acceso. Estas fueron algunas de las medidas que tomamos en un principio con la finalidad de proteger la integridad del niño puesto que sabíamos que al no medir riesgos cualquier accidente podría suceder.

We became a family where precaution is paramount, in my house it is not easy to get a knife, a razor or a scissors, cleaning supplies are well guarded and everything that is not edible or that can cause any harm to my son must be stored in a place where the child can not have access. These were some of the measures we took at the beginning in order to protect the child's integrity since we knew that by not measuring risks any accident could happen.

Mi hijo actualmente tiene 11 años de edad y seguimos manteniendo muchas medidas de seguridad en casa, hemos avanzado mucho en cuanto a independencia pero mi hijo es un niño no verbal y está comprometido cognitivamente por lo que suele pasar por muchas crisis de ansiedad al no saber expresar de manera adecuada todos sus sentimientos y emociones.

My son is currently 11 years old and we still maintain many safety measures at home, we have come a long way in terms of independence but my son is a non-verbal child and is cognitively compromised so he often goes through many anxiety crises as he does not know how to adequately express all his feelings and emotions.

Como mamá trato de apoyarlo en todo cuanto puedo ya que mi hijo todavía requiere de asistencia y supervisión la mayor parte del tiempo. Sin embargo, él es un miembro más de la familia y por lo tanto lo integramos en todas las actividades familiares que realizamos. Actualmente existe al colegio y afortunadamente ya está adaptado a su rutina escolar, lo llevamos de paseo a centro comerciales, a la playa, al parque e incluso nos acompaña el supermercado.

As a mom, I try to support him as much as I can because my son still requires assistance and supervision most of the time. However, he is a member of the family and therefore we integrate him in all the family activities we do. He currently attends school and fortunately he is already adapted to his school routine, we take him on trips to the mall, to the beach, to the park and even to the supermarket.

Como familia tratamos de permanecer unidos y tratar al niño en casa igual como tratamos a su hermano mayor para no crear conflictos entre hermanos, tratamos de llevar una vida lo más normal posible y aunque vivimos a puerta cerradas e incluso bajo llave por la protección del niño hacemos lo posible para interactuar con familiares y amigos con frecuencia.

As a family we try to stay united and treat the child at home the same way we treat his older sibling so as not to create conflicts between siblings, we try to lead as normal a life as possible and although we live behind closed doors and even under lock and key for the child's protection we do our best to interact with family and friends frequently.

No les voy a mentir vivir con una persona con autismo te hace vivir al límite, hay días en los que te sientes feliz y hay otros días en los que es imposible no dejar salir allá el llanto. Vives en una montaña rusa de emociones pero si hay un sentimiento que no puedes dejar de sentir es AMOR porque simplemente es imposible no amar a una persona con sentimientos tan puros y tan nobles como las personas con autismo.

I am not going to lie to you, living with a person with autism makes you live on the edge, there are days when you feel happy and there are other days when it is impossible not to cry. You live in a roller coaster of emotions but if there is one feeling that you cannot stop feeling it is LOVE because it is simply impossible not to love a person with such pure and noble feelings as people with autism.

Mi hijo es el niño más cariñoso que puede existir sobre la faz de la tierra y sé que esto lo deben decir muchas madres (risas) porque para nosotras nuestros Ángeles son los mayores tesoros que la vida nos dio. A mí hijo le encanta abrazarme y besarme a cada rato, para mí es el amor más puro e inocente que puede existir, cuando él me abraza y me besa yo me siento la mujer más afortunada del mundo porque sé que no existe otra persona que me pueda amar tanto y de una manera tan pura como lo hace mi hijo con autismo.

My son is the most loving child that can exist on the face of the earth and I know that many mothers must say this (laughs) because for us our Angels are the greatest treasures that life gave us. My son loves to hug and kiss me all the time, for me it is the purest and most innocent love that can exist, when he hugs and kisses me I feel like the luckiest woman in the world because I know that there is no other person who can love me as much and in such a pure way as my son with autism does.

Y es que resulta tan fácil amar a estas personitas tan puras e inocentes, que una vez que aprendemos a convivir con ellos es imposible imaginar nuestros días sin que ellos estén presentes. Diariamente le pido a la vida que me permita continuar al lado de mi hijo para apoyarlo y acompañarlo, deseo que mi hijo pueda ser una persona independiente pero sobre todo deseo que sea feliz.

It is so easy to love these pure and innocent little people that once we learn to live with them, it is impossible to imagine our days without their presence. Every day I ask life to allow me to continue by my son's side to support and accompany him, I want my son to be an independent person but above all I want him to be happy.

Y ya para finalizar me gustaría dejar una pequeña reflexión para todas las personas que leen "Las familias de niños o adolescentes con autismo no queremos que sientan pena por nosotros, solo queremos ser respetados. Que entienda que nuestros hijos tienen una condición de vida que los hace percibir ciertas cosas de manera diferente pero no son niños malcriados ni somos padres irresponsables. La mayoría de nosotros estamos haciendo nuestro mejor esfuerzo por brindarles el apoyo y la comprensión que nuestros hijos merecen y lo menos que queremos es ser criticados o señalados por personas que no tienen conocimientos de nuestras luchas diarias."

And finally I would like to leave a small reflection for all the people who read "Families of children or adolescents with autism do not want to feel sorry for us, we just want to be respected. We want you to understand that our children have a life condition that makes them perceive certain things differently, but they are not spoiled children and we are not irresponsible parents. Most of us are doing our best to give them the support and understanding our children deserve and the least we want is to be criticized or singled out by people who have no knowledge of our daily struggles."
