_Una escuela muy diferente._

Desde el primer día que pisé la Escuela de Bellas Artes, supe que no encajaba. No era por su aspecto de casona vieja, ni por los jardines marchitos bajo un sol fatigado. Tampoco eran los profesores, que cruzaban los pasillos enlutados y mudos. Siempre fui escéptico (el tipo de persona que no se deja llevar por presentimientos ni supersticiones), pero había algo allí, algo que no se veía, que vibraba en el aire como un zumbido apenas audible.

Los otros estudiantes parecían normales al principio. Había quienes reían fuerte, otros que dibujaban compulsivamente, y algunos como yo, más callados, buscando su lugar. Pero bastaron unas semanas para que todo cambiara: de repente, sus ojos se volvían vacíos en medio de una conversación, sus bocas temblaban como si cuchichearan secretos que nadie más podía oír. Empecé a notar miradas fugaces entre ellos, como si compartieran un idioma que yo aún no entendía.

Las clases, que prometían ser un refugio para la creatividad, comenzaron a volverse pesadillas. Nos ponían frente a lienzos cuyos colores parecían supurar, nos hacían leer poemas que, sin entender por qué, me dejaban intranquilo, con la sensación de que algo dentro de mí se había desacomodado.

Una tarde, fui a un salón viejo detrás de la escuela, estaba abandonado. En ese lugar, una grieta se mostraba de pared a pared con un ancho linealmente perfecto sobre el piso. De ella salía un olor agridulce y repulsivo, como flores enmohecidas por agua estancada. Me acerqué. Y vi, un resplandor que cizallaba de un lado a otro hasta opacarse por completo; lo percibí como un palpitar proveniente de muy abajo, como si la tierra misma estuviera atrapada en una pesadilla de la que no podía despertar.

Fue entonces que algo, muy dentro de mí, se fragmentó. Mi sombra ya no era mi sombra; iba detrás de mí, torpe, como un animal viejo. Y los demás comenzaron a mirarme distinto, con sonrisas que se estiraban demasiado y saludos que tardaban un segundo más de lo normal, como si sus voces estuvieran atrapadas en un lugar más frío.

Me repetía: —Todo es normal, es solo cansancio—, pero cuanto más luchaba, más se disolvían las certezas. A veces, en clases, veía las palabras derretirse sobre los pizarrones o los rostros de mis compañeros alargarse con gestos que desaparecían cuando parpadeaba.

Una noche, con el miedo enredado en la garganta, regresé a ese salón que olía a polvo viejo. Un puñado de estudiantes hacía guardia junto a la hendidura, pegados, con ojos fijos al imantado agujero. No hablaban, pero en el aire flotaba un rumor espectral, como el latido enfermo de un corazón que ya no sabe si quiere seguir peleando o dejarse caer.

Y de pronto, la grieta se abrió un poco más, soltando un sonido áspero, y en lugar de niebla, brotó un resplandor dorado, una luz torcida como si alguien hubiera exprimido el sol hasta dejarlo vacío. También emanaba un olor dulzón y espeso, por lo que tragué saliva, o intenté, porque cada aliento me llenaba de una náusea que parecía querer arrancarme los intestinos.

De ese resplandor surgió algo —alguien— que caminaba como humano, pero que no era. Su piel brillaba como cera caliente, lisa hasta el absurdo, y sus ojos... Dios, sus ojos. Vacíos. No había iris, no había vida, solo agujeros donde debería habitar solo el alma.

Quise correr, gritar, hacer cualquier cosa que me recordara que todavía era dueño de mi cuerpo, pero todo en mí se había convertido en estatua. Mi cabeza chillaba, y mi voluntad suplicaba, pero mis pies —malditos traidores— se aferraban al suelo. Sentí una lágrima rodar por mi mejilla justo antes de que aquello me rozara el brazo, con una dulzura tan falsa que dolía más que cualquier golpe certero.

El suelo tembló debajo de mí, las paredes se quebraron en hilos finos, astillándose como porcelana. Entonces lo oí: un crujido profundo, sucio, no de piedra ni de madera. Era yo. Algo dentro de mí, de tanto resistir, se desmoronó, rindiéndose como quien abre una puerta oxidada que ya no puede cerrarse.

No recuerdo el grito. No recuerdo el momento exacto en que dejé de ser yo.

Solo sé que ahora espero. Espero junto a ellos, en ese salón de Bellas Artes, el único lugar de esta escuela donde la tierra late y murmura.

Ahora, cada vez que un nuevo estudiante cruza el umbral, sentimos su miedo recorrer por los pasillos.

Y sabemos que pronto, muy pronto, también será uno de nosotros.

_A Very Different School._

From the first day I stepped into the School of Fine Arts, I knew I didn’t belong. It wasn’t because of its old house-like appearance, nor the withered gardens under a tired sun. It wasn’t the teachers either, who drifted silently through the halls in mourning. I’ve always been a skeptic (the kind of person who doesn’t fall for omens or superstitions), but there was something there, something unseen, vibrating in the air like a barely audible hum.

The other students seemed normal at first. Some laughed loudly, others drew compulsively, and some, like me, were quiet, looking for their place. But it only took a few weeks for everything to change: suddenly, their eyes went blank mid-conversation, their mouths trembled as if whispering secrets no one else could hear. I started noticing fleeting glances between them, as if they shared a language I didn’t yet understand.

The classes, which promised to be a refuge for creativity, started turning into nightmares. They placed us in front of canvases whose colors seemed to ooze, made us read poems that, without knowing why, left me unsettled, with the sense that something inside me had been knocked out of place.

One afternoon, I went to an old room behind the school, abandoned. In that place, a crack stretched from wall to wall in a linearly perfect width across the floor. A bittersweet, repulsive smell came from it, like moldy flowers soaked in stagnant water. I approached. And I saw a glow slicing back and forth until it dimmed completely; I felt it like a heartbeat coming from deep below, as if the earth itself were trapped in a nightmare it couldn’t wake up from.

It was then that something deep inside me shattered. My shadow was no longer my shadow; it trailed behind me, clumsy, like an old animal. And the others began to look at me differently, with smiles stretched too far and greetings that lingered a second too long, as if their voices were trapped in a colder place.

I kept repeating: —Everything is normal, it’s just fatigue—, but the more I fought it, the more certainties dissolved. Sometimes, in class, I saw the words melt on the blackboards or the faces of my classmates stretch with gestures that vanished when I blinked.

One night, with fear tangled in my throat, I returned to that dusty-smelling room. A handful of students stood guard by the fissure, glued to it, their eyes fixed on the magnetic hole. They didn’t speak, but a spectral murmur floated in the air, like the sick beat of a heart unsure if it wants to keep fighting or let go.

Suddenly, the crack opened a bit more, releasing a harsh sound, and instead of mist, a golden glow emerged, a twisted light as if someone had wrung the sun dry. A thick, sweet scent also rose, making me swallow hard, or tried to, because each breath filled me with a nausea that felt like it would tear out my insides.

From that glow emerged something —someone— who walked like a human, but wasn’t. Its skin shone like hot wax, absurdly smooth, and its eyes… God, its eyes. Empty. No iris, no life, just holes where only the soul should dwell.

I wanted to run, scream, do anything to remind myself I still owned my body, but everything in me had turned to stone. My head screamed, and my will begged, but my feet —damned traitors— clung to the ground. I felt a tear roll down my cheek just before that thing brushed my arm, with a false sweetness more painful than any blow.

The ground trembled beneath me, the walls cracked in fine threads, splintering like porcelain. Then I heard it: a deep, filthy creak, not of stone or wood. It was me. Something inside me, after so much resistance, crumbled, surrendering like a rusted door forced open that could never close again.

I don’t remember the scream. I don’t remember the exact moment I stopped being me.

I only know that now I wait. I wait with them, in that room of Fine Arts, the only place in this school where the earth beats and murmurs.

Now, every time a new student crosses the threshold, we feel their fear running through the hallways.

And we know that soon, very soon, they too will be one of us.
