On the last two Sundays I reported on a light painting on and in the swimming pool. At the end of last year I received a tool tip from @lichtkunstfoto. Which I really wanted to test. I show the result below.

Ende letzten Jahres erhielt ich von @lichtkunstfoto einen Tool-Tipp. Den ich unbedingt testen wollte. Das Ergebnis zeige ich unten.

First I worked with a carbon fiber 360 degree panoramic gimbal from Neewer, which is designed to hold over 13kg. I bought this gimbal for my first camera rotations. Nowadays I rarely use the item because it is simply too big for my backpack. The scaling is given in 10° increments, which is not particularly helpful for rotations in 45° increments.

Zuerst arbeitete ich mit einem Kohle Faser 360 Grad Panorama Gimbal von Neewer, der für ein Gewicht über 13kg ausgelegt ist. Diesen Gimbal hatte ich mir für die ersten Kamerarotationen zugelegt. Mittlerweile benutze ich das Teil eher selten, weil es einfach zu groß für den Rucksack ist. Die Skalierung ist in 10°-Schritten angegeben, das ist bei Rotationen in 45°-Schritten nicht sonderlich hilfreich.

Since I swapped the CANON 6DII for a NIKON Z5, the gimbal had to be readjusted first. This happened quite quickly in the kitchen facing the tiled wall.

Da ich die CANON 6DII gegen eine NIKON Z5 eingetauscht habe, musste der Gimbal erstmal neu justiert werden. Das ging recht schnell in der Küche mit Ausrichtung zur gefliesten Wand.

Then it was off to the swimming pool. I positioned the tripod with gimbal and camera centrally in front of the pool. This time I stayed dry. 😉 A bat buzzed around me again. But I'm used to it now.

Dann ging es an den Swimmingpool. Das Stativ mit Gimbal und Kamera positionierte ich zentral vor den Pool. Diesmal blieb ich trocken. 😉 Eine Fledermaus schwirrte wieder um mich herum. Daran bin ich jetzt aber gewöhnt.

Then I start a test recording. I illuminated the edge of the swimming pool with the NOCTIGON DM11. Like last time, the surrounding area was illuminated from the neighboring property. First I tested a 180° rotation. As you can see in the picture above, not exactly straight, but sufficient for my purposes.

Danach starte ich eine Testaufnahme. Mit der NOCTIGON DM11 leuchtete ich den Rand des Swimmingpools an. Die Umgebung wurde, wie beim letzten mal, vom Nachbargrundstück angeleuchtet. Zuerst testete ich eine 180°-Rotation. Wie man im Bild oben sieht, nicht ganz gerade, aber für meine Zwecke ausreichend.

Next, I adjusted the gimbal to 30° and rotated the camera in 90° increments. I covered the lens with a black cloth while rotating. The result already looked promising, so I repeated the rotation in 60° steps.

Als nächstes justierte ich den Gimbal auf 30° und führte eine Kamerarotation in 90°-Schritten durch. Wobei ich das Objektiv während der Drehung mit einem schwarzen Tuch abdeckte. Das Ergebnis sah schon vielversprechend aus, Also wiederholte ich die Rotation in 60°-Schritten.

Well, since I already recorded a 60° rotation, I immediately added a 30° rotation. That was a bit too much for my taste. So I decided to realize my idea for the cover image with a 60° rotation. To do this, I selected orange on the Rollei LUMIS I-Light RGB and positioned the lamp on the edge of the swimming pool. Then I started the camera rotation 270° with the lens open to draw the orange line. I then covered the lens with the black cloth, removed the orange lamp from the set and started the 60° rotation as described above. So the cover photo was in the can.

Naja, da ich schonmal eine 60°-Rotation aufgenommen habe, legte ich gleich eine 30°-Rotation nach. Das war für meinen Geschmack etwas zu viel. Also beschloss ich meine Idee für das Titelbild mit einer 60°-Rotation zu realisieren. Dafür wählte ich, an der Rollei LUMIS I-Light RGB, Orange aus und positionierte die Lampe den Rand des Swimmingpools. Dann startete ich die Kamerarotation um 270° bei offenem Objektiv, um die orangene Linie zu zeichnen. Das Objektiv deckte ich danach mit dem schwarzen Tuch ab, entfernte die orangene Lampe aus dem Set und startete die 60°-Rotation wie oben beschrieben. Damit war das Titelbild im Kasten.

Now there was the new tool that I really wanted to test. It is a Z & V platform from Alyn Wallace offered by the company "Move Shoot Move" for 40 US$. It is small and light and fits in any pocket. The whole thing was assembled and adjusted in the kitchen again, as shown in the picture below. Whatever you can see, the scale division here is also very questionable. For both the Z & V platform and the gimbal, it makes sense to attach a digital inclinometer to the camera.

Nun war da noch das neue Tool, welches ich unbedingt testen wollte. Es handelt sich um eine Z & V-Plattform von Alyn Wallace angeboten von der Firma "Move Shoot Move" für 40 US$. Es ist klein und leicht und passt in jede Hosentasche. Zusammengebaut und Justiert wurde das Ganze, wie auf dem Bild unten zu sehen, wieder in der Küche. Was man auch sieht, ist hier ebenfalls die Skaleneinteilung sehr fragwürdig. Sowohl für die Z & V-Plattform, als auch für den Gimbal ist es sinnvoll, ein Digital Inclinometer an die Kamera anzubringen.

In the picture below you can see that camera rotation is basically possible with a Z & V platform. But the whole thing is very unstable and wobbly. This means that light trails blur during rotation. I hope you enjoyed the post. This will be the last part of the swimming pool light painting for now. But we are still staying in Brazil. I'll report on it next week. So stay tuned!

Auf dem Bild unten ist zu erkennen, dass grundsätzlich eine Kamerarotation mit einer Z & V-Plattform möglich ist. Das ganze ist aber sehr instabil und wackelig. D.h. Lichtspuren während der Rotation verwackeln. Ich hoffe der Post hat euch gefallen. Dies soll vorläufig der letzte Teil vom Swimmingpool-Lightpainting sein. Wir bleiben aber noch in Brasilien. What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
