##### Good morning, everyone! Welcome to another post in the [WorldMapPin Community](https://peakd.com/c/hive-163772/created)! Welcome to the second part of the walk I took with some friends on September 29th last year, on the occasion of “World Rivers Day”. In the previous [post](https://peakd.com/hive-163772/@xrayman/foz-do-rio-lizandro-ericeira-portugal-eng-pt), I showed you the fantastic route we took from the end of the mouth of the River Lizandro to the beach of the River Lizandro, located in the picturesque municipality of Mafra. Today, I want to share with you the second part of that same route, which we took from the village of São Julião, where the São Julião Chapel is located, to São Julião Beach, which is just over half a kilometer away if you take the road.

##### Bom dia a todos! Bem vindos a mais uma publicação na [Comunidade WorldMapPin](https://peakd.com/c/hive-163772/created)! Bem-vindos a segunda parte do passeio que realizei com uns amigos, no dia 29 de Setembro do ano passado, por ocasião da celebração do "Dia Mundial dos Rios". Na anterior [publicação](https://peakd.com/hive-163772/@xrayman/foz-do-rio-lizandro-ericeira-portugal-eng-pt), mostrei-vos o percurso fantástico que fizemos entre a parte final da foz do Rio Lizandro, até à praia do Rio Lizandro, localizada no pitoresco concelho de Mafra. Para hoje, quero aqui partilhar a segunda parte desse mesmo percurso, que fizemos desde a povoação de São Julião, onde se localiza a Capela de São Julião, e a Praia de São Julião, que fica a pouco mais de meio quilometro se for feito pela estrada.

Of course we weren't going to take the road, with its fantastic views and a natural footpath that follows the seafront, which is one of the main points of this route. Arriving at Largo da Igreja, in the parish of São Julião, and coming from Praia da Foz do Lizandro, we immediately came across a small square, with little more than ten low houses, whitewashed and with the staves and windows painted blue! So picturesque. They all had a small internal garden, so to speak, and in at least three of them, people were already outside setting up tables for an _"al fresco"_ 😉 lunch.

Claro que não iriamos fazer o percurso pela estrada, com uma fantástica vista e um caminho pedestre natural que acompanha a orla marítima, e que é um dos pontos principais deste percurso. Chegados ao Largo da Igreja, na freguesia de São Julião, e vindos da Praia da Foz do Lizandro, deparamo-nos logo com um pequeno largo, com pouco mais do que dez casas baixas, caiadas de branco e com as aduelas e janelas pintadas de azul! Tão pitoresco. Todas tinham um pequeno jardim interno, por assim dizer, e em pelo menos três delas, estavam já pessoas no seu exterior a preparar as mesas para um almoço ao ar livre.

It was a very sunny day, and although there were no clouds above us, the ambient temperature was pleasant and not too hot. Maybe part of this is because we're so close to the sea, and receive the gentle salty breeze that comes from it.

O dia estava muito solarengo, e apesar de de não haver nuvens por cima de nós, a temperatura ambiente até era agradável, não estando um calor imenso. Se calhar parte disto é mesmo por estarmos mesmo perto do mar, e recebermos a suave brisa salgada que dele parte.

You can see some people outside their houses, under a generous sun shade, resting. In the central part of the square, there is a small clearing, which is flanked by some stones that have been carefully painted and adorned. In addition to their eye-catching colors, they also bear some words associated with positivity, such as “freedom”, or even a little phrase that pretty much sums it all up: “One day at a time”. It was fun to walk around these pebbles, and with the little girl who accompanied us on the walk, to pay attention to her. The look on her face said everything about how these simple stones can attract such good energy.

Conseguem ver algumas pessoas no exterior das suas casas, por baixo de um generoso para sol, a descansar. Na parte central do largo, existe um pequeno descampado, que é ladeado por algumas pedras que foram cuidadosamente pintadas e adornadas. Para além das suas cores chamativas, estas ostentam também algumas palavras associadas a positividade, como "liberdade, ou mesmo uma pequena frase que resume praticamente tudo: "Um dia de cada vez". Foi engraçado percorrer essas pedrinhas, e com a menina que nos acompanhou na caminhada, estar atenta a ela. O olhar dela dizia tudo sobre a qualidade de estas singelas pedras conseguirem atrair tão boas energias.

At the end of the square, with its right wall facing the immense sea, was a chapel, which was not locked. This is something we don't often see these days. Often, in these smaller towns, the chapels are closed outside the usual times of scheduled celebrations. Much to avoid being vandalized or even damaged. But not this one! It was open, and as the sun was warming up, we decided to visit it before leaving for São Julião beach.

No fundo do largo, e encostada ao limite deste, com a sua parede direita virada para o imenso mar, estava uma capela, que não se encontrava fechada à chave. O que nos dias de hoje, é algo que não é tão comum vermos. Muitas vezes, nestas localidades com menor dimensão, as capelas encontram-se encerradas fora dos habituais horários das celebrações programadas. Muito para evitarem serem vandalizadas, ou mesmo danificadas. Mas esta não! Estava aberta, e como o sol estava a aquecer, decidimos antes de partir para a praia de São Julião, a visitar.

It had a simple entrance, which led to an atrium covered in tiles with various religious motifs, which then gave access to the chapel itself.

Tinha uma singela entrada, que dava para um átrio que era coberto com azulejos, com vários motivos religiosos, que depois dava acesso à capela propriamente dita.

Despite its uniqueness in terms of size, it was well looked after, in good condition and ready to welcome anyone who wanted to come in to meditate or simply visit.

Apesar das sua singularidade no que diz respeito à sua dimensão, esta estava cuidada, dentro das condições e preparada para receber quem quisesse entrar para meditar ou simplesmente a visitar.

A few minutes later, we set off. Outside, with its back to the sea, there was a cross (as they call it around here), flanked by two vertical panels covered in tiles, dating from 1784 (MDCCLXXXIIII). Which, to me, is not the Roman numbering I learned, as it should be MDCCLXXXIV. Do you agree? Maybe I'm the one who's mistaken. The question remains!

Alguns minutos depois, colocamo-nos a caminho. No seu exterior, e de costas para o mar, estava um cruzeiro (como assim se chamam por aqui), ladeado por dois paneis verticais revestidos a azulejos, que data do ano 1784 (MDCCLXXXIIII). O que para mim não é a numeração romana que eu aprendi, pois deveria ser MDCCLXXXIV. Concordam? Se calhar sou eu que estou equivocado. Fica aqui a pergunta!

Between the houses leaning against the wall that delimited the small village, we made our way towards our destination, with the sea to our right. A little further down, we could already see the golden sands that adorn the much-loved beaches in the background.

Por entre as casas encostadas ao muro que delimitava a pequena povoação, fomos avançando em direção ao nosso destino, com o mar pela nossa direita. Um pouco mais abaixo, já conseguíamos ver ao fundo as douradas areias que ornamentam as praias tão desejadas.

On this narrow but safe path, we passed a public fountain that had water in it, but it was stagnant. Someone had probably used it to wash some clothes? Had they? It was dripping from the two spouts that supplied it, but at a very low rate.

Nesse caminho estreito, mas seguro, ainda passamos por uma fonte pública, que tinha água, mas que estava estagnada. Provavelmente alguém a teria usado para lavar alguma peça de roupa? Terá sido? Ela estava a gotejar das duas bicas que a abasteciam, mas a um ritmo muito baixo.

The inscriptions on the São Julião tiles date back to 1788 (MDCCLXXXVIII), with restoration work carried out by the Carvoeira Parish Council in 1961.

Nas inscrições que constam dos azulejos alusivos ao São Julião, datam de 1788 (MDCCLXXXVIII), com obras de restauro implementadas pela Junta de Freguesia da Carvoeira em 1961.

A few meters further on, a recreational fisherman was patiently waiting for a fish to take his bait, many meters downstream! It's something I've never experienced in my life: fishing. Neither in fresh water, nor at sea, on the coast or in a boat. Let's see if I can try it one of these days.

Uns metros mais à frente, um pescador lúdico estava pacientemente a aguardar que muitos metros mais abaixo, algum peixe mordesse o isco! É algo que eu nunca experimentei na vida, pescar. Nem em água doc0,e nem em mar, na costa ou em embarcação. A ver se consigo que um dia destes eu vá experimentar.

A few dozen meters further on was the new sculpture alluding to São Julião beach, which seems to invite passers-by to use its shape to sit down and take a perfectly framed photo! There were still a few people who did so, but I didn't happen to take any photos of myself sitting there, as I think it would spoil this landscape and horizon, which is so perfect, don't you think?

Umas dezenas de metros mais à frente estava a nova escultura alusiva à praia de São Julião, e que parece convidar quem por ali passa usar a sua forma para se sentar e tirar uma foto perfeitamente emoldurada! Ainda houve algumas das pessoas que assim o fizeram, eu por acaso não tirei nenhuma foto comigo lá sentado, pois acho que iria estragar esta paisagem e este horizonte tão perfeito, não acham?

In the end, we had a drink at a café located near the parking lot, called "Gota d'Álcool". I don't know if that's the best name for this place, but that's what they gave it! At this place, many families were finishing or some were starting to eat their lunch. As we hadn't made a reservation, and it was already past 2pm, we had to find lunch in a nearby village, but we had to drive there.

No fim, acabamos por tomar um refresco num café que esta localizado perto do parque de estacionamento automóvel, chamado de "Gota d'Álcool". Não sei se o melhor nome para este local, mas foi o que lhe colocaram! Neste sítio muitas famílias estavam a terminar ou algumas a começar a tomar o almoço. Como não tínhamos feito reserva, e já passavam das 2pm, tivemos que procurar almoçar numa povoação ali perto, mas para tal deslocamo-nos de carro.

It was a very pleasant morning and early afternoon. A celebration of "World Rivers Day" that was very different from the ones I'd done so far, because I didn't know about this worldwide celebration! I hope you enjoyed getting to know this little corner of the Portuguese coast, and in this particular case, the region of Ericeira, Mafra. Foi uma manhã e inicio de tarde muito agradável. Uma celebração do "Dia Mundial dos Rios" muito diferente das que tinha feito até então, isto porque eu não sabia dessa comemoração mundial!
