Value Of Time - Part 5 - finale
Why is time, such a valuable resource, sometimes cheap and worthless and sometimes absolutely priceless? It is quite simple. Time flows regardless of what we are doing with it. One cannot save it for later, therefore, the volatility. For example, if you have nothing better to do than sleep all day, your time flowing away while you're sleeping. You will learn nothing new, you will do nothing useful during that time. On the other hand, if you need to choose from five or six projects each offering a material gain in exchange for your time, it would be a different story. Your time will be quite expensive. Also, if you have enough material resources that you don't need to sell your time, your time could be extremely expensive. It is very logical.
There are more than a few factors defining a value of your time in the complex equation of life. It is not limited to financial gains. Person's skills, knowledge, resources, abilities, experiences, creativity, circumstances... etc. are also important elements in determining the value of someone's time. It also greatly depends on person's affinities and preferences. Some of us would never sell the time they have for their family, hobbies, soul and passions, some would. There is no rule.
There is a price tag for everyone's time. People are often successfully turned into working machines on account of promises of bright future and material gains. During that transaction, they forget to mention that person will probably change before that promised 'bright worryless future' happens and it might lead to a completely different way of seeing the world. Time has a way of changing our points of view.
This is one of the reasons why some people have a problem when retiring from their jobs. They are used to certain routines and change can do harm to them. Person's self-esteem might drop because they've never built a life outside their working environment. There is a number of similar aspects that need to be taken into consideration when determining the value of our time.
After all, time is the only resource we really have at our disposal. We own it but it is leaking daily, no matter what we do.
Therefore, make sure you get your priorities straight and define your affinities as early in life as possible. Your decisions will affect all the years to come. Think of what would you like to be spending your time on and work toward it. Your time cannot be locked up in a vault nor you can earn dividends of it, you cannot trade it, nor reduce its flow. Therefore, make it count, pin a high-value tag on it because no one else can or will do it for you.
Time is of the essence, right?
Well, to be fully honest - time is the essence.
