Want to avoid confusion when trying to learn to do magic tricks? Can't find anyone to help you pick out beginner magic tricks? That's natural and don't worry about it. I have a few tips to help you out.
When I was just starting out in magic, maybe I was seven or eight, I was lucky enough to have a Dad who got me going in the right direction by taking me to the public library. He said I should get books on sleight of hand. Being as stupid and stubborn as I was, I said that "no, I want to learn magic" and promptly found some books on magic. Well, they were books on "black magic" and other awful stuff that I wanted nothing to do with, so I followed Dad's advice (which I should have done in the first place since he was such a smart guy). I found some books on "magic tricks" and "sleight of hand" and away I went.
Let me save you some time. Sleight of hand is hard. It takes a lot of practice to do right. Plus, you have to make sure you are learning it the right way otherwise you will have to unlearn your bad habits later. There is an easier way to go.
No matter what age you are, you should focus on "self-working" or "easy to do" magic tricks. For younger kids there are magic sets for sale that have neat little made-from-plastic tricks that are a lot of fun and easy to do. Even better are books written for younger kids that have great tricks you can do with stuff you can find around the house. Teens want to focus on "trick card decks" and books that have easy, "self-working" card tricks in them. If you are a teenager (or even 8-12) you can get started learning sleight of hand from books first if that is the kind of magic that interests you. If you keep at it, your sleight of hand skills will grow and you'll start blowing people away before you know it.
Finally, for adults. There are many really good magic books that focus on self working magic with cards, money, rope and other common items. A bit of study and practice will get you doing some cool tricks in no time.
