Wild Horses

  • acrylic on canvas, 30 x 25 cm, 2017

This is an original piece that I painted using a technique called fluid painting or pour painting. With this technique the paint is thinned down to a fluid consistency which allows it to move over the canvas and combine with the other colours in uniquely beautiful ways.

When I use this technique, I like to apply the paint using what is known as a 'flip-cup' method, whereby after layering the paints into a cup, the cup is 'flipped' over onto the canvas allowing the paint to flow and combine all in one move.

It can be a very exciting moment when you pull the cup away from the canvas and see the paint flowing over the canvas. Tilting the canvas to influence the flow is harder than it looks and I have lost more than one painting by dropping the cup or the canvas as the wrong time.

But when it all comes together, it is mesmerizing to watch to paint flow over the canvas then seeing the beauty as it continues to emerge from the paint.
