"Trees and Shadows"

Painted on location near Arroyo Hondo, New Mexico.

”Trees and Shadows” 14”x16” (#637) oil on canvas by Lee Gordon Seebach

Common, ordinary landscape scenes often strike my fancy. Here, some interesting trees along an irrigation ditch did it for me. I especially liked the lighting, the cast shadows, the diagonal created by the ditch, and the colors.

It has been written in several biographies that John Singer Sargent - one of my painting heroes - would plop down just about anywhere and start painting. He said he thought a painter ought to be able to paint anything that Nature presents to him. I figure that, yes, it’s swell to be able to paint anything, but why not look around a bit and find something inspiring? I don’t just paint anything, in other words. I need something that gets my creative juices flowing and I say to myself, "Oh, wow! I've got to paint that!"

I hope you enjoy seeing this painting.

More to come,

Lee
