Let's Look @ Superior Lego Sculptures; Entry #1--The Bumble Bee

So, it has been almost a month since Hurricane Matthew swept up the east coast and deposited insane amounts of water on North Carolina. Many of our rivers, creeks, and streams swelled to capacity and smashed through dams. One of the creeks, Cross Creek to be exact, trickles through town as a shallow stream of water. In most places you can cross Cross Creek without getting your feet wet. During Hurricane Matthew this creek rose approximately 35 feet and washed out plenty of pavement. It just so happens this same creek cuts behind the Botanical Gardens in Fayetteville, NC. Last weekend I stopped by there to take in this Lego exhibit and was astounded to see clean up work still being done, mud lines halfway up trees remained to remind folks of the awesome power of nature. This Bumble Bee was the first sculpture of the exhibit and hung just inside the Convention Center.

The time and patience it took to put this sculpture together is unbelievable, especially once you see some of the other sculptures in the exhibit that truly leave you speechless as to how they were built, and how they remain standing without additional support.

Looking at these sculptures I was reminded of my own Lego playing days...or were those Lincoln Logs...LOL...in either case, I dare say I never created a work of art like any of these sculptures I will be sharing in this series of posts. I think sculptures of this sort, crafted out of uncommon mediums, are true works of art...and for those who disagree, try putting one together...I have a feeling you will change your mind.

As you can see, this one took a little more than 16,000 Lego blocks to complete. Most of the sculptures had these little plaques positioned nearby to provide more information and a bit of education for those who were interested. When possible I captured cock-eyed images of those as well.
