This past weekend I was summoned a state away to assist a family member in need; an elderly diabetic uncle ate something he shouldn't have...began to slip into a diabetic stupor, and fell and broke his hip as he attempted to struggle with my Aunt, who was trying to help him get to the car. Long story short, he will be fine. This was the first episode of this nature, normally he is very attentive to the foods he eats. It just so happens he grabbed a few cookies from the wrong plate at the VFW hall while being honored as a veteran. He got home and started acting funny, which is when my Aunt decided to take him to the hospital for a check-up. That's when the excitement started.
Lo and behold, as she was trying to get him to accompany her to the car, he lost track of who he was, where he was, and who was with him. This resulted in a knee jerk reaction in which he attempted to jerk free of the grasp my Aunt had on his arm...he slipped/tripped and fell, triggering the hip fracture. Living 4 hours away and being the closest relative, I was called upon for assistance, so I responded. In my haste I gathered my art supplies (coloring books) a few changes of clothes and headed out the door.
Once I arrived at the hospital and made sure everything was okay with my Aunt and Uncle, I settled into the waiting room until advised he was in recovery. It was during this short stint that I realized I had brought everything with me that I needed...except for the colored pencils I normally use when fleshing these out. As you can see, I had to make an adjustment. I bought a couple cheap sets of markers (advertised specifically for this type of activity) and went to work adding various colors to the Mehndi design.
I must admit...at first I thought I'd found a new medium for adding color to the Mandala and Mehndi designs I choose to complete. The vibrant colors that were capable with the markers were truly eye catching...however, the markers bled, which was a disaster to try and deal with (on at least 5 occasions I considered throwing the whole thing away unfinished). I toughed it out and finished the piece, but the markers were an absolute fail in my opinion...not only did they bleed, but they also caused the paper to crumble, ball up, and attach to the tip of the marker...which meant an enormous amount of "tip wiping" just to get this page completed.
The finished piece didn't turn out too bad, but I must confess...I appreciate the colored pencils more than the markers, at least at this point in time. I thought the markers would make short work of adding vibrant colors...in retrospect it took twice as long as turned a relaxing endeavor into one of frustration...which isn't what this was supposed to be about!
