Hello guys! I'm super excited to share my newest drawing with you. This is my entry and inspired by @juliakponsford 's contest themed "Nature". There is almost a week left if you'd like to join as well. This is the contest post.
The Art Process
First I intended to draw a unicorn, because of the #junicorn challenge. However, it turned out that dragons are accepted for this contest, so I just couldn't resist. To stay true to the theme tho, I decided to also draw some flowers.
I wanted to use vibrant watercolors, mostly because it has been a while since l painted and I really enjoyed making those bookmarks long ago.
In the the start staring at a blank page felt somewhat daunting, so to make things easier I filled the whole page with random colors. I used a travelers waterbrush, the plastic one that you fill with water and squeeze the amount you want. I really love the brush as it's convenient and I can water down the paper on the go to achieve specific effects.
Before inking I did a very quick tiny thumbnail sketch. The sketch confirmed my idea and I felt more confident to start inking. The dragons are based on hummingbirds, while the flowers are essentially roses. I used reference very loosely, as I focused more on having fun than accuracy.
The pencil sketch is hard to see here, but it was an essential step for the drawing. I chose to draw 4 open roses because it's my lucky number. I also added 3 closed ones to make a total of 7 roses, a universal lucky number.
Here you can see the first outlines. I kept it as simple as possible at first, in case I want to make some changes during shading. I used a 0.4 ink pen, because I can achieve thin and thick lines with it easily.
The inking took a lot of patience, but it was worth it. First I decided the direction of the light: left top corner. Usually I shade in one direction, but this time I tried to follow the forms and making shadow areas the darkest. Also I intentionally made the leaves very thin and barely noticeable, making the drawing feel more full without being distracting.
The drawing is almost done!
Finished! Well almost, I added a bit of digital touch to make it pop out. Strong contrast in colors and shading is the best way to catch attention. This also inspired me to make a short poem, I hope you guys enjoy.
The Sky
I dream of dreams
Of skies above this sky
And soundless sounds
Of heartbeats of my heart
Previously I mentioned Junicorn, it's an artists' challenge to draw unicorns during the month of June. The most well known monthly challenge is inktober: drawing with ink in October based on a prompt (an official list of words). Recently I came over an interesting post on fb where many artists shared all the challenges they know. I compiled a list for myself and I think some of you might enjoy the challenges.
creatunary, #faeburary, #marchoftherobot, #florapril, #mermay, #junicorn, #junescapes #kaiijune, #skyjully, #smaugust #inktober, #drawloween, #octobit, #sketchtember, #huevember, #dinovember, #drawcember
Bonus
I have an ongoing contest I hope you guys can check out. If only 1 person enters, they will automatically win! :D
A new kitty. Beautiful stache!
Still feeding all of the kitties. Sadly the youngest 2 seem to have gotten eye infection. I was told by the animal rescue person to try applying some Canesten from a regular pharmacy. Also to start feeding them some raw minced meat with C and B vitamins to strengthen their tiny immune system. I will try this tomorrow and keep you guy posted! And maybe motivate a few to try to do same :) (There is an enormous problem with stray dogs and cats here, and the animal rescues are already overfilled).
Any suggestions and tips are very welcome! I have no previous experience with taking care of cats, because of too much moving. :)
