STREET ART IN MONTREAL 13

Today I discovered a new mural in my city and I wanted to share it with you. It has been recently installed in Pointe St. Charles neighbourhood, at the beginning of June. The mural depicts the history of the neighbourhood which used to be an industrial area back in the days.

"Mémoire de Pointe-Saint-Charles" is a collective art initiated by the Carrefour d'éducation populaire de Pointe-Saint-Charles.

It has been realized by the efforts of fifteen artists who collaborated at different stages of its creation. It took two years to have it finished and it involved historical research, preliminary sketches, a mock-up panel and the painting of the real boards.

It pays tribute to the First Nations people, the first inhabitants of the land, to the French colonizers, to the Roy girls that came to establish themselves in what was to become the future Maison-Saint-Gabriel, to the arrival of the British, as well as to the Irish presence in the factories.

The middle of the mural illustrates two strong symbols of the industrialization and the relocation that came along with it: the railway and the Lachine Canal. The community and solidarity of Pointe-Saint-Charles have only got stronger throughout the years.

Among those who contributed to the creation of this project we count Gilbert Ouellet (animator and coordinator), Lisa Gauvin, Graziella Malagoni, Colette Sauvageau, Sekai Sekai and Lucille Roy, the main artists.

The mural is a photographic reproduction of the original artwork which was realized on wood panels. The size of the artwork is 2.4 meters by 24 meters (8 ft by 52ft).

The mural is located behind the Charles-Lemoyne school, on the side street connecting Hibernia street with Grand Trunk, or at the intersection of Grand Trunk street with Island Street.
