I like role playing settings that are not the standard medieval fantasy. I like the weird and unusual, stuff that is just a bit different. Don't get me wrong, the medieval style settings can be great fun, but there are so many that it is often fun just to try something a bit different. Lamentations of the Flame Princess by James Raggi is definitely not your standard fantasy setting. Oh sure, there are monsters and magic, but the monsters are nightmarish one offs than entire species of critters. James did a contest a while back to define a magic item for his game. The one he deemed to be the most interesting would get an entry into his game. I was fortunate enough to have the winning entry with my Maelific eye (along with doing the art). Not your standard magic item for sure. It grants large amounts of power, but ultimately corrupts the soul of the wielder. Not only that, just to employ the damned thing you have to pluck out your own eye and put the horrific thing in the empty socket. But alas, some folks are willing to go to terrible extremes for any bit of power they can muster. Lamentations of the Flame Princess is definitely a unique setting. Something akin to our own Renaissance period, there is gunpowder and magic (which often has a terrible price). Monsters are usually unique creatures and tend to the horror side of the spectrum - monsters in the truest definition of the word.
