Have you ever wondered how a worm is born?
Worms are hermaphrodites, they have both male and female sexual organs. The mating pair will go head to head, tummy to tummy and start exchanging sperm with the other. Long after the worms have separated, the clitellum secretes a material forming a ring. The worm then slides off the ring and at the same time injects its eggs and the sperm from the other worm in it. Each end of the ring will then close and seal forming a cocoon that is almost white at the beginning progressively turning cream then brown/red as it matures and is ready to hatch.
In the photo above, you can see a little baby worm poking his head out of the cocoon, while its elder brother/sister is already roaming around (a little bit on the right hand side).
