Tumeric is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family. It is native to Southern Asia requiring temperatures between 20 to 30 degrees and a lot of rainfall for it to thrive. Widely used in cooking different cuisines for thousands of years and has many health benefits. It is said 800,000 tons of this wonderful spice are produced each year, with over 75% coming from India. After India the other producers occur in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tiawan, China, Myanmar and Indonesia. But is also grown commercially in many Central and South American countries.
Tumeric has many anti-inflammatory benefits, decreases cancer risk, used for detoxification, also good for help balancing blood sugar, and certain digestive disorders. It's said that as little as 1 to 2 grams per day can help with health benefits. It also has three different curcuminoids, curcumin, bisdemothoxycurcumin and demothoxycurcumin. But also contains volatile oils like tumerone, atlantone and zingiberone.
