How to Eat Like You Mean to be Healthy

What is the best way to eat a healthy diet? Should you be counting calories, or fat, or sugar, or what?

Common wisdom says that fat and unhealthy people are stupid and lazy and already know what they should be doing to get healthy, and just do not do it. I am not lazy or stupid and tried hard to lose weight and get healthy for three years. I do not want to go into that nightmare time, but at the end of it I was down about 40 pounds and so miserable I did not know what would ever help me do better.

Here is what finally worked for me.

Counting Nutrition

I started counting my nutrition in December 2010. By October 2011 I had lost the last 80 pounds I needed to lose and that weight has never come back.

Here are the essential nutrients according to a site I like called The World's Healthiest Foods

I started with Vitamin C and Fiber those many long years ago. I found out by working through this chart that:

  • I was not getting the daily recommended amount of most of these nutrients
  • The daily recommended amount is low for most of them anyway
  • The vast majority of my old diet had NONE of these nutrients
  • The nutrients were not very hard to get if I ate real unprocessed food
  • I did not need to count calories or anything else if I just paid attention to getting these healthy nutrients into my daily food.

Over the next weeks I am going to be doing posts on these nutrients. I will tell you:

  • what they are
  • why you need them
  • how to get them from healthy sources
  • how to prepare food so you get the best advantage

If you follow along, you will improve in your eating habits and stop getting as much of the "bad" stuff in processed food that makes us sick.
