First and foremost if you are not already starting out with THC extract it will be more difficult to accurately estimate our THC percentage to grams of oil for dosage, as opposed to how much weight in herb you started with.
If you have the privilege to buy cannabis in a legal dispensary you will find that the THC percentage levels are listed on the product. This will better help you calculate your cannabutter does.
If you have for example 1oz(28g) of marijuana be mindful that this weight should be relative to your coconut oil weight.
Define the ratio you would like. Just remain aware of how powerful your herb is. Take control over the alchemical process.. if you want a 1:1 ratio you'll need 28g of herb to 28g of oil. A 1:4 ratio you'll need 28g of herb to 112g of oil. This all depends on how potent you would like your product.

Add 1L of water and your desired amount of coconut oil to a sauce pan and bring to a simmer. Your oil will melt. While that is warming up, grind your up your marijuana - add it to the water. This extraction does not take long. As long as your oil is melted and there is a simmer tot he water, the THC will slip away from the water and jump in the oil.
Our herb has now been rendered worthless. We must remove all the solids. This is easily done by getting another container and pouring your herb/water/oil mix into it though a cheese cloth, or a t-shirt works too. Use this as a filter to separate the liquid and solid. Discard solids.
When you've gotten the liquid separate put that container int he fridge overnight. The oil will solidify a the top of the water. You can discard the liquid and store your canna-butter in the fridge. Handel with care!
