Habitual Living Do People Need It

Can Routine Decrease Our "fight or flight" instincts?

Over the years we been taught to seek out happiness, in the terms that happiness is more of something than we already have. This leads many people to jump spontaneously into any kind of activity, from the idea friends are going out for a drink I will join them, even if I have an exam or presentation tomorrow and I am not completely prepared. Living spontaneous like this can aid the feeling of fear. Afraid of the unknown that our actions my cause. Being afraid this way can cause the "fight or flight" response to be triggered.

When we hear the word routine we tend to think of boring or an unfulfilling life. This is not the case at all

The point is not what the routine consists of, but how steady and safe your subconscious mind is made through repetitive motions and expected outcomes.

routines build a feeling of safety for our subconscious. This does not mean routine is simply living life like a robot. Routine can simply be having things structured, a basic layout of the day, when task A is completed I will move on to task B.

structure provides direction in your life

Through building routines we learn to control our fears, living outside these daily routines this "fear" begins to tell us we are making the wrong choices. Another great benefit of routines is that we increase our efficiency.

I been wondering why I been trying so hard to find a routine, and came across this article today https://www.talkspace.com/blog/2015/07/why-do-highly-sensitive-people-engage-in-routines/ which explains that some people tend to be highly sensitive, and these people live better knowing what each and every day is going to look like. People who are highly sensitive can become overwhelmed by an overload of stimuli, whether positive or negative.

I propose that we start setting a routine, something as simple as:

  • I make a pot off coffee each and every morning.
  • Do the daily chores around the house.
  • Take care of the animals.
  • Spend time on SteemIt!
