Today it was a little breezy in Wellington – the wind was blowing at around 120km/h, so I thought I’d do my running indoors where I’m less likely to end up experiencing a short flight into the harbour.
Disclaimer: You know the story by now, these are not my shoes doing the running.
So I did a slow 5kms on the treadmill and then stopped to do some deep stretching. My knee seemed quite happy about that.
So after the stretches I got back on the treadmill for another 1km fast run. This was a totally different gait and it got my legs stretching out really well.
The biggest problem I had was getting enough air. It was hot and stuffy in the gym and I was sweating buckets by the end of it. That’s unusual for me as I don’t tend to sweat much when I’m exercising.
I think I have fully recovered from the 20km run in the weekend without any damage, which is good.
That puts me in a positive frame of mind for going a bit harder later in the month.
Since I’m kinds getting into this now, I’ve been thinking about getting a watch to track my runs. At the moment I use Runkeeper on my phone which is ok. But if I want to check how long or how far I have run, I have to stop, take off my backpack, get the phone out turn it on and then do it all in reverse, and start running again.
Do any of you have any recommendations?
I’d like to get something that will have a good battery life so it will last a full marathon with the GPS running. And in the future, if I survive the marathon, I’m thinking of trying an ultra-marathon (is there no end to this man’s insanity?) so I’d like it to last long enough for that also.
I’m a small person so I don’t want some huge hunk of a watch that makes me run lop sided, but I also don’t need something uber high tech made of Kevlar or something.
My budget is probably around US$200-250 if that helps.
Leave me your recommendations in the comments below and I’ll check them out.
