You can take photos of them however. They are a bit shy sometimes, but every now and then you find one that does not fly away as soon as it sees you.
They can be quite large, like the size of a small chicken, and their wings are very loud when they flap past your head.
For such a large bird, they seem to have no problem flying through quite thick stands of trees.
There photos were all taken by me in Wellington, in the trees in the parks and gardens of the city.
