"The Sound Of The Wooden Bell"
A while back, as I was getting product ready to sell, I began sorting and cleaning vintage bells and came across one that was not vintage but had a story to tell. It was this medium sized wooden bell and these words are carved into it:
"No one hears the cry of the poor or the sound of the wooden bell."
In doing research, I found that this is an Haitian proverb that is based on the following complete poem in the book: .....as a tale that is told, Psalms 90:9 by Wayne Drayer. It read as follows:
"Does anyone hear the sound of the poor
or the sound of a wooden bell?
Does anyone stop and listen
to the stories they have to tell?
Or does this frenzied life demand
an ever-increasing yell.
Smothering out the cry of the poor
and the sound of the wooden bell?
Yes, there are those who hear the cry
and the sound of a wooden bell:
whose hearts are tuned to the fainter sounds,
not only the clanging knell:
But woe to those who close their ears,
of them the Scriptures tell,
That they shall become as the cry of the poor,
and the sound of the wooden bell. "
Proverbs 21:13
"Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard."
