The roar of the ocean masked the sound of his footsteps as he approached her. She had her back to him, watching the waves crash into the rocks below.

In times past, they would have been standing together, his arm around her shoulders, her arm around his waist. They would stand on the cliff top, sometimes for hours, watching the sun go down, the birds squawking at each other, as they circled high above.

In the beginning of their relationship they would come to this quiet cove often, driving up from London separately, each struggling with mixed feelings of guilt and excitement. The small inn on the harbour was in need of sprucing up, but it was cheap, welcoming and cash only, so no paper trail to fret over. Here, in the arse-end of the country, they would not be spotted by a friend or acquaintance. Their love, illicit and dangerous in the city, here had a certain purity. They could enjoy each other, without looking over their shoulders. When, at last, their relationship had been uncovered by his wife, it had seemed like the end of the world, but also the chance to create a new one. But whilst his marriage failed under the strain of his infidelity, hers flourished. He was even sent an invitation to the renewal of their vows.

Perhaps she had moved on, but he had not.

She didn’t hear him until his arms were wrapped around her, holding her close. They smashed into the rocks below.

Together, forever more.
