"I wasn't always afraid of the dark,” I said as Flinn swam his way over near me, while I took my bath in the rockroom. ”You know what happened to me. A giant squid ...”
”Ya, ya, I know. A giant squid came from the dark depth, thinking you were a seal and bam! you were flipped upside down.” He takes a seat beside the door on the outside.
”Ya! I wouldn’t have gotten away if it wasn’t for the merman who was around at the time.” I held my ducky close as I recounted that terribly, frightful night.
”There is no merman,” Flinn said in a mockingly toned voice. He raised the glass bottle in his fin to his mouth to drink from the three-quarter empty bottle. ”You, Hercules, just like to let your imagination,” he takes a few gulps before continuing, ”run away with your crazy thoughts.”
”You only want to make fun of my misfortune.” I grabbed my towel that was laying on the floor.
”You’re so, so right. I do.” He taking in more of the intoxicating liquid.
”You know,” I said as he began drying myself, ”if you weren’t a drunk and always hang with a woman, you could have seen the merman yourself and saved my life.”
He spews forth from his mouth some of the liquid he’d almost swallowed as he laughs. ”No one wants to be as nutty as you are. You get high off your tall-tale adventure stories,” waving his fins high in the water. ”I’ll take the real thing.” A grimace smile slaps across his face as he remembers, what can be remembered, the sweet tasting girl he had that night. ”Unlike you, friend, my head is in the right place.”
I cross over to the mirror and take a look at myself. I shouldn’t be afraid. I wasn’t always afraid of the dark. But the image kept flashing in my head. I was almost eaten by a squid! I’ll go back with a camshell to get a picture of the merman. Maybe that will cure me as of my affliction.
Creeping into the rockroom and staring at me from behind, Flinn says, ”Whatever you’re thinking, save it for the bigger fish, Fish.”
