You’re standing in front of a small, beaten up table. Sitting on the other side is Danny, the largest of the Smackpunch band. He’s staring at you and your bandmates with an amused smile as he pours out two shots of Irish whiskey. He slides one of them over to your side of the table.
“He looks confident,” you say.
“Tio can beat him,” Machete says.
“Yeah,” Tres says, “I can’t even count how many times he’s dragged our drunk asses into the van and still manage to drive.”
“No doubt about it. You’re our champion Tio!” you say.
He nods, returning Danny’s stare.
“I love Irish whiskey,” Tio says sitting down in the chair opposite Danny.
“That’s a good lad!” says Danny, “Now let’s see if you can hold it.”
The Captain appears at the side of the table.
“You’re playing hard-core Power Up. You’ll down a shot every two minutes. The first person to be sick or pass out loses. Understand?” she asks looking at you and your band mates.
“Got it,” Tio says. The rest of you nod. She pulls out a stopwatch.
“Go!” she yells and both men down their shot.
“Good stuff!” Tio says smiling at Danny.
“The perfect age,” Danny replies and refills the shots.
“What I like about this game,” he continues, “is that it’s quick. It weeds out the fakes and wannabes fast.”
“What’s your record?” you ask. He looks up at you annoyed.
“No one’s ever made it past six. I always win,” he says and winks at you.
You, Tres, and Machete look at each other and relax. Some days Tio’s had more than that for breakfast.
Twelve minutes in and Tio downs his sixth shot. Danny’s grins a huge toothy smile.
“Finally! A true competitor,” he says.
Tio reaches out for the bottle, refills the shots, then looks at the label.
“What?” Danny asks.
“Just making sure there’s alcohol in this stuff,” Tio says and everyone in the room chuckles.
“Of course there is!” Danny yells grabbing the bottle back from him.
Four minutes later and shots seven and eight are history.
Danny’s eyes are glassy, and he’s holding on to the table. Tio looks as good as ever.
They both throwback shot nine, and Danny almost falls off his chair. Tio is silent, and steady.
Danny slides shot ten over to Tio, who downs it without waiting for the timer to go off. Danny growls, lifts the glass, tips his head back and promptly falls over backward in the chair.
The Captain rushes over to him and slaps his face. Danny is down for the count.
