Chinese New Year illustrations for Saatchi&Saatchi

I've been working with one interesting Chinese client creating illustrations for Wrigley Calendar in 2011. Project was extremely successful. After some time that guy who was leading the project moved to another advertising agency (Saatchi&Saatchi) asking me to draw some stuff for their fun inner celebration corporate Chinese New Year application.

They had really crazy idea which I have not got at all. But it looked so fun I was laughing all the time reading the brief. Strange Chinese world I will never understand. Maybe someone from China here could explain (in English please) what is it?

Big ships are hugging user heads and you can slap them. That's it. So you can upload your own photo there and slap yourself or your boss maybe?

Agency Prototype

As one of the biggest and famous agencies they had highly detailed brief but since it was an inner project they had some small inner budget there. They need that to be done fast so we decided to get my old works changing and adapting them for new needs.

Landing page or loading application intro screen was going to look like this.

Ha-ha! They were so cute that even tried to help me copying my own sheep for one of the screens but I think they've failed a bit here. It looks like a Chinese copy of Fil Dunsky style. Anyway, so cool brief! I started to work immediately. They had really tight deadline by the way.

My Sketches

This time I've done all the sketches right on the computer without using any paper and pencils which I am usually start with.

Coloring

All the sketches have been approved almost without a single correction and I've started to render all the things using my old works as a base for them. These two was accepted without comments.

Here I had to add and change some things as you can see. Glad I can finally show it here because I never blog it anywhere with such a details even at Behance.

This one had been approved almost without any comments too but then we had to strain with the main landing page. I thought to leave it flat but they've forced me to add some small depth and then more and more details. Too much of details made this piece look too distracted. It's hard to fix an eye on anything here. I guess this was the main reason why we were trying and trying more with changes.

They didn't ask me to draw the last piece but I was happy to make it as a bonus for them because it was really cute to draw such a sheep in love on the clouds....

If you are celebrating Chinese New Year then I wish you all the best, prosperity, love, patience, peace and to get more and more knowledge. Never stop learning new things!

My hometown Khabarovsk in Far East is bordering with China on Amur river and we have a lot of Chinese people there but I know only two Chinese words Sesi and Pu ji tao so please comment in English.
