We walk down to the beach to talk. It is very adult, very respectable. Tears are shed, but quietly. We do not raise our voices.

Afterwards, we sit on the sand and watch the tide go out.

I think we must look like the two boats stranded on the beach, in front of us. We are close, almost touching. Almost as if we were one. But it is an illusion, obviously.

Only one of us is really stranded here.

She finishes her cigarette, and apologies once more.

“It’s not you, it’s me,” she says, dusting off both sand and cliche. Sand flies in my face. But I smile.

After she has gone, I sit and stare into the calm waters, until dusk falls.
