Matt and Sarah walked into the doctors' office and took a seat. The waiting room was overcrowded and Sarah was annoyed that they had to wait. They sat for nearly half an hour before she was called in. Matt asked if he should come in with her and she shook her head.
After a thorough examination, the doctor told her that he could find nothing physically wrong with her but he wanted to do a blood test just to make sure. He asked her some personal questions as well as her age. Very annoyed she told him all he needed to know, and sat there waiting for nearly ten minutes before he appeared again.
"Well, I think I have some good news for you...or not..." The doctor saw the look on her face and could see that she was panicking. "Calm down Mrs Maloney, stress is not good for you in your condition?"
"Condition? What condition?"
Sarah started crying immediately but the doctor put his hand on her shoulder and said:
" I'm sure that you will survive. You're pregnant Sarah...I think congratulations is in order."
"Congratulations! WHAT??? How did this happen??" Sarah cried even harder. "This is not happening! It can't be!" She shouted to the doctor. "I'm nearly forty years old! What the hell am I going to do with a baby?"
After the initial shock wore off, the doctor gave her a prescription for some vitamins and tablets for nausea. She walked out of his office and Matt panicked when he saw her. She walked straight past him out the door, as if she was in a trance. Matt rushed out behind her, and was just in time to catch her when she fainted. Matt picked her up gently and carried her back to the doctor's office.
She woke up a few minutes later with Matt on the one side and a nurse on the other side. "What happened?"
Matt told her what happened, and then Sarah started crying again. "Oh Matt I have some bad news...I don't even know how this happened... I'm so sorry, I...I'm pregnant.."
"Are you serious? How can this be bad news? This is wonderful news!" Matt grabbed her and kissed her full on the lips.
Matt opened the car door for Sarah and she got into the passenger seat. Matt seemed so excited but Sarah was not so happy. Various thoughts rushed through her mind. She wasn't sure if she ever wanted kids. She had never really thought about it, and now she was confused. She sat staring out the car window and all she could hear was the doctor's words: "If you ever wanted a baby, then now is the time. You might never get this chance again."
Matt stopped at the office to pick up some documents that he could work on at home. Sarah waited in the car and afterwards they drove straight to the pharmacy and then home. She took the tablets the doctor prescribed and then went to lie down a bit. She had so much to sort out now...she had so much to think about....
Matt brought her some tea an hour later and she looked a lot better than she did earlier. She sat up straight and said:
"I don't think I can do this. I don't know anything about babies. This is going to mess up our whole perfect life!" Before she could say anything further Matt kissed her again to quiet her down.
" You don't have to do this alone. I will be right by your side all the way...let us not make any hasty decisions today."
