Fields of Madness, p3 (#fiftywords)

Last week, during @jayna's #fiftywords challenge, the prompt was 'field' and I wrote a teeny arc with one of my main characters. I thought I would continue the little arc with fifty-word increments during the following #fiftywords challenges and #365daysofwriting challenges, challenging myself and Cael with the unknown. :D

This week's prompt for the #fiftywords challenge is 'lens'.

The Last:

Cael peered about the witch’s so-called “Fields of Madness”.
Verdant grounds, lush mountains, and jagged crevices; not a soul in sight.
A mist crept down the nearby pass, dark whispers on approach.
"Your failure is imminent, young Prince."
Laughter encircled him and he closed his eyes. He stood ready.

Today's Addition:

His closed eyes were an exposing lens that pierced through the darkness.

The encroaching mist a shroud of ethereal faces; their gaping mouths slobbered, eyes as flames, screams no louder than the wind.

They came for him, beckoning with their flickering, serpentine tongues.

Cael smiled.

“I will not be taken.”
