Testing The New GoPro Hero 5 - Sunday Surfing Session 📷

'Write about the things that attract you. Choose your subjects the way you used to choose your toys: out of desire.' - Harry Mathews

Well I decided to do both things at the same time: choose a new toy (out of complete desire) and write about it.

Who said Sundays are boring?

Girls And Their Toys

It seems that I have a serious toy problem lately. Not too many weeks ago I bought a new surfboard.

I will have to write many articles on steemit to cover my impulsive purchases though.

So here's my latest acquisition: the GoPro Hero 5 Black. Baaaaam!

In addition to the camera I bought the classic 'Surfboard Mount' - aiming to install the camera on the nose of my surfboard - and a 'Floaty' making sure the camera wouldn't sink in the unlike case the adhesive of the mount failed.

Why GoPro Hero 5?

The new Hero 5 is definitely one of the hottest tech gadgets that have come out this year.

Besides the obvious redesign (compared to the previous Hero 4 series), there are some features that totally convinced me:

  1. Waterproofness: The unit is fully waterproof down to 10 metres without the need for a separate housing. Since I am going to use the camera for my surfing sessions most of the time, this was a killer argument.
  2. Voice Control: Controlling gadgets with voice commands is a HUGE feature and GoPro implemented a whole range of commands in the Hero 5 series. So I keep on paddling towards the next wave while my camera already starts filming by voice control. Awesome!
  3. Display / Menu: The camera sports a totally redesigned menu and it's a dead smart design at that. The handling is intuitive and really fun.

My First Experience 📷

Unfortunately there were not many waves yesterday. Murphy's Law!

However, I totally enjoyed my very first GoPro recording session.

POWERFUL

These type of shots are exactly what I am looking for. Water is the dominant element of surfing. I want my photography to pay tribute to the power and beauty of Mother Ocean.

WILD

Surfing takes place in the wilderness. I want my frames to be natural and authentic. The sea and the sun don't need any make-up or editing. I love the water drops in this pictures btw.

DYNAMIC

Water sports require a lot of physical but also mental strength. I want my shootings to reflect the energy, vitality and dynamics related to surfing.

BLESSED

Being in the water means so much fun, pleasure and positive feelings to me. If my pictures and movies assigned only a fraction of the joy I feel during these sessions to the audience, I'd be happiest.

I hope you enjoyed the little insight into my weekend action.
The next time I'll bring some moving material and show you my first video frames. Crossing my fingers for a good swell :)

Big hugs,
Marly - 🏄
