Today's juice: Popeye’s favorite (original recipe)

 Today's juice star is spinach.

Everyday I make juice for my family of 5 from vegetables and fruit I have in my fridge. I aim for 200 mL (6.8 oz.) of fresh juice for each member of my family but a bit more is never an issue. 

This juice can be a bit sour, so if you prefer a bit sweeter tasting one substitute half of lemon with an apple or add an apple.

 To make ~1 L (~33.8 oz.) of juice with a slow juicer I have used:

  • 3 big handfuls of spinach (~150 g or 5.3 oz.) 
  • 4 apples (~700 g or 1.5 lb) 
  • 5 celery sticks (~190 g or 6.7 oz.) 
  • 1 lemon (~50 g or 1.8 oz.)
  • 1 orange (~250 g or 7.0 oz.)

Time to cut  all of the ingredients to pieces and juice them one by one.

Spinach

Compounds such as flavonoids and chlorophyll found in leafy greens are known to reduce high blood pressure and prevent many types of cancer. High content of iron helps to build red blood cells. 

Celery

High calcium content calms down nerves and helps reducing blood pressure. 

Lemon

Lemon juice is full of antioxidants, minerals such as potassium. It helps to regulate body acidity and blood pressure. It also strengthens immunity and improves complexion. Some studies claim that drinking lemon juice helps with weight loss. 

Orange

This fruits are full of antioxidants which reduce the free radicals in the bodies and by that slow down the aging processes and prevents from cancer. The flavonoids and vitamin C of oranges boosts the immunity system and decreases the risk of heart diseases. 

Apple

Vitamin K which is responsible for keeping calcium in bones is found in high content in apples. This makes it an amazing fruit for osteoporosis protection. Pectin in apples helps with digestion and aids bowel movements keeping the digestive tract healthy. This compound also has LDL (bad cholesterol) reducing properties. Apples also contain quercetin which protects brain cells from damage which leads to Alzheimer’s.
