Spirulina Smoothies – The Quickest Way to Enjoy Spirulina

Tasty Treats from the Blender

The nutritional benefits of Spirulina are no secret, I have also written about them here. The taste is a whole nother question though.... Sure, I keep saying how much better fresh Spirulina tastes, but some of us may not have access to the fresh stuff, yet want to take Spirulina for its incredible benefits. That means back to the pills, which you swallow whole and don't have to think too much about it any longer.

For those of us, however, who would like to make a bit more out of it, here are a couple smoothie recipes, where Spirulina makes a nice addition, even in powdered form, though the fresh stuff still tastes better:

 O. J. Turbo

  • 500 ml (1 pint) of orange juice
  • 1-2 carrots
  • 1 apple
  • 1 TS Spirulina
  • A little bit of turmeric and/or ginger (if desired / available)

The ingredients for this recipe should be easy to find in most places, and they are full of taste and nutrients. This is also the smoothie I make myself to cure any hangover. It's worked so far.

Tropical Delight

  • 500 ml (1 pint) coconut water
  • 1-2 bananas
  • 1 mango
  • 1 TS Spirulina
  • A little bit of cinnamon and/or vanilla (if desired / available)

This recipe is of course best if you happen to be in the tropics, where the major ingredients come straight from the tree.

Probiotic Spirulina Smoothie

  • 500 ml kefir (or kombucha if you wanna go lactose free)
  • 1-2 bananas
  • 100 g (3 oz) pecan nuts
  • 1 TS Spirulina
  • A little bit of any type of spices you might wanna add

Although Spirulina itself is a probiotic, together with kefir or kombucha we'll get the extra benefit (and taste) of the probiotic drink.

These three are the smoothies that have worked for me best. Of course they are all as flexible as you like. Everything is modular, changeable, you can add or take away from them as you like, and in the meantime come up with new creations.
