"I've made you a curry," she said, smiling as she opened the door. I gave her the bottle of wine - a cheap new world red, that I hoped looked more expensive than it was - and smiled in return.

"My favourite! Are you trying to curry favour with me?" She laughed but it sounded false and I regretted my play on words immediately. "It smells..." I sniffed - it smelled bloody weird, an odour of spices and unwashed socks. "... absolutely delicious!"

She took my coat and I saw her checking the label of the wine. I didn't notice a sneer, so might have got away with it. Every other person is a bloody wine buff or an expert of frigging coffee, these days. I blame youtube! It's turned people into instant knowitalls.

"I admit I am experimenting, a little today," she said. "A recipe I have invented!" She beamed. It was a beautiful smile and I returned it with interest. "Curried sprouts," she said.

Yum...
