The room was filled with the tick-tock-ticking of a very large long case clock. I wasn't sure if it was a grandfather clock, or a grandmother clock: I could never remember the difference. But it was a beautiful clock. It's surround was made of highly polished walnut wood, and the face was large and clear. The bottom half of the case had a hole cut in it and you could watch the pendulum swing back and forth, back and forth.

I sat and watched it, wondering if it was there to relax people, as a kind of hypnotic effect. Perhaps, in different circumstances, it might work. But my anxiety levels were high. The tick tocking of the clock and the pendulum swinging and the second hand moving oh-so-slowly round the clock face just marked the waiting time.

The minutes slowly counting down to the announcement of death sentence or reprieve.
