Freewrite House November Madness
If you haven't heard about the Freewrite House November Madness, let me tell you all about it.
We are going to write a novel in one month.
Crazy, right?
But if you are a writer and have been around for a while, you are going to say that that sounds familiar. Yup. It is not our original idea. NaNoWriMo has been at it for many years and is inspiring thousands - probably hundred thousands - to do just that. Write a novel in one month.
But we are going to add a twist.
For those that have a hard time to move their writing forward, we are going to use the daily prompt to keep on writing. And we are going to have prizes 👍.
Prizes
- How does 35 SBI Shares for the "Winners" sound to you? Pretty good, right?
The plan is to divide the bounty between all that managed to finish their 50,000 words (that is what NaNoWriMo says it the minimum word count for a book to be considered a novel).
Thank you @felt.buzz and @mariannewest for donating the prizes.
There is more!!
- @ntowl is going to hold a weekly drawing for 2 or maybe even 3 SBI shares. She will announce at the beginning of the week what she is going to reward. Could be the highest word count of the week, the person who helped a struggling writer the most, or? We shall see.
But that is not all
- We will do a daily post at the Freewrite House with the prompt (same as the daily prompt) and Novel Writing news, tips, and encouragement. The liquid payout of those posts will be added to the grand prize!
Wait! Don't walk away. More good news for you!
- Marianne will delegate an extra 600 SP to the Freewrite House for that month and all Madwriters will get an upvote on their posts. You must use the # freewritemadness on your post.
If anyone else likes to donate or delegate, we love it!

Getting Ready
Since reinventing the wheel is not a good idea, we are all going to register with NaNoWriMo and use their word counting system for accountability. If you haven't done that yet, do it - and then follow the next 2 steps as outlined above.
Take one of your previous 5-minute freewrites - yes, find one that actually took 5 minutes - and count how many words you got. You can copy and paste your post into one of these word counting tools.
http://wordcounttool.net/
https://www.countofwords.com
Take 1667 and divide it by your number. Then multiply that number by 5. This gives you the minimum amount of minutes you have to set aside every day to be able to finish by the end of the month.
When you get the next daily prompt - like tomorrow - forget about the 5 minutes and try to write a story with 2000 words. That will give you an idea if that will flow easily for you or not.
Think about a few characters you might like to see in your novel. You could write their backstory now or you could write the backstories as part of your Freewrite Madness.
Start hoarding snacks since you can't leave the house for a whole month!! (🤓 just kidding)
Write your freewrites for the next few days at different times of the day and notice when the writing seems to be the easiest - when it is the hardest.
Check your November calendar. Do you have days you know that you won't be able to write - like your best friends wedding you are in the wedding party AND you are catering it. Stuff like that. Figure out how much you will have to write every day to make up for those days.
Leave a comment with your timezone either as a comment here or if you don't want people to know, send me a DM. I have a handy tool that allows me to see if there are time slots when we are all awake at the same time.
What to Expect
I will publish a prompt here at the Freewrite House every day corresponding to the Daily prompt on the @mariannewest profile.
If it seems a helpful tool for you, I will publish a couple more prompts much like the weekend freewrite to help you to keep on writing.
You are under no obligation to use the prompts. They are here to help, not to restrict.
If you want to take advantage of the daily upvote, you need to post something. It could be what you have written that day, an excerpt from your writing, a post telling us your word count or how the day went for you. To be considered for the upvote, you have to tag your post with #freewritemadness.
Alternatively, you can leave a comment under the November Madness post. I will count the posts/comments of the previous day and upvote all with the same percentage. How much that will depend on the other Freewrite House events going on at the same time.
I will schedule several session where we can work together in "person" either via discord voice, zoom, Facetime or..... There is no obligation ever to participate in those sessions. We will also schedule a weekly hang out session where we will just talk.
Are you ready???
