Cracking Up

I used to DJ my own radio show on KBUT in Crested Butte, Colorado way back in the day. I didn't DJ because I was especially good at talking - I mean, in general I talked a lot to be sure, and had a lot of interesting things to say, and I wanted to talk a lot on the show, but I didn't. I was aware that I had foot in mouth syndrome, not sure how or why really, and as a result I was petrified to open my mouth lest something come out that was going to turn around and kick me in the arse in some unforeseen way. I was probably overreacting but decided to err on the side of caution having suffered countless blows coming my way from seemingly out of nowhere. (It's been an odyssey figuring out why I experienced so much abuse; I'm no innocent victim to be sure but some things can be more innocuous to unravel than others.)

My original show was called "Tangerine Dream" which soon changed to "The Life, Love and the Pursuit of Ecstasy Show." Ecstasy, for me, was (and still is) the dream of True Love that is passionate and enduring. Obtaining that might be akin to hugging a porcupine - painful, yet, potentially possible. It's been painful for me however I'm still a believer.

During my show, on this one particular Saturday night, I had two close friends joining me. Shyela (pronounced Shy - ee - la) and Joshua. She was my bestie in town, and he worked at the same Rafting & Snowmobile company I worked at. He was a guide and I worked in the office which was in the front room of the house that stands directly to the right when you enter Crested Butte. "Keggerman" our fearless leader was notorious for doing Class 5 (most dangerous) white water runs with the customers. He wasn't flippant about it in any way. I once saw him take 30 minutes deciding if we were going to run a particularly dangerous rapid with many of us vying to run it when in the end he decided not to. (And thank God - we were ignorant fools those of us attempting to appear courageous - it looked as scary as rafting down a giant blender!)

Back at the radio station we were cruising along with the zesty, smooth, funky tunes I was known for playing. I was in the back searching for more songs to play. Shyela was at the controls queuing up the next song when I walked up to her frantically trying to figure out why she couldn't hear the music she knew was playing...

Taking a quick glance I realized the mic was on which quiets the music in the booth. Uncontrolably cracking a smile and backing up so she couldn't see me I watched as she began talking into the mic without realizing it was on. Joshua was trying to help her while I receded further into the background by now cracking up with my hand over my mouth. In a few moments she says "Oh I think it's this", as she presses a button, and the mic goes off and viola the music comes on. As it sinks in to her that she was talking into the mic on the air the whole time, she turns around to see me cracking up so hard that I'm doubled over. As she and Joshua are staring at me the legs of my bib overalls begin to turn a darker color as, yes, I peed my pants laughing.

"Like a racehorse" Joshua says.

(It was worth it.)
