"Mother Knew Best" A weekend freewrite

Yay! It’s the weekend!!! So that can really only mean ONE THING!!

It’s time for the #weekendfreewrite!

Each week @mariannewest gives three #freewrite prompts and you have to write for five minutes using each prompt - but no cheating and looking at the next prompt UNTIL you have finished with the first one!

You can find this weeks first prompt here: @mariannewest/weekend-freewrite-4-6-2019-part-1-the-first-sentence

"You are the one who is in complete control. You are the one who will be defeating him." The voice echoed in my head. A female voice, one I recognised. That of my mother, dead for ten years. I tried to ignore her, tried instead to concentrate on what Brian was saying. He was talking about work, I remembered that much. Something about one of his colleagues who had done something, or said something, that had upset him. I narrowed my eyes, and nodded, hoping that this showed a concern I did not feel.

My mother's voice continued to chant the same two sentences over and over again. I wasn't sure who the "he" was she was referring to.

Surely not Brian.

He was not a threat to me, not someone I needed to defeat. I smiled as Brian said something. He looked at me, a confused look. I tuned in to what he was saying, with difficulty.

"Are you alright, Claire? You look a little distracted."

"Otherwise, you are going to sit there and try and try and try. This will only get in the way." My mother said, changing her chant to another one.

"I'm not feeling too good, actually, Brian," I said, gesturing to my head. "I have a migraine coming on, and I'm finding it hard to concentrate. I think I might have to go home."

He looked disappointed. "Oh, okay," he said, pulling out his phone and checking the time. "I'll cancel the dinner reservations and order a cab." I started to shake my head but he held up his hand. "I'm not letting you drive if you have a migraine coming. It's dangerous."

I smiled and nodded. "Okay," I said. I watched him as he made the two phone calls. He was a nice man. It was a shame I didn't have any attraction to him. My mother kept chanting the two new sentences and I missed what Brian said. "Sorry," I said, "I didn't catch that."

"The cab will be another ten minutes. Do you want to wait in here, or do you think the fresh air will do you some good?" He pointed outside.

...

"Outside would be good," I said. He stood up and helped me get my coat on. My mother's voice seemed to quieten a little as we stepped outside into the cool spring evening. I took a deep breath. Brian looked at me, a concerned look on his face, but had the good sense not to try to touch me, or to talk to me. Around me I noticed there was blossom, falling from a tree - cherry perhaps? - and floating on the air currents. It looked almost like snow.

Brian cleared his throat and checked his phone. "Ah, there it is," he said, pointing at a dark blue Ford that pulled up beside us. He opened the door, spoke with the driver and handed him a bank note, despite my protestations. "Go home," he said. "Rest. I'll phone you tomorrow and see if you are alright." I smiled and allowed him to kiss me on the cheek before getting into the cab.

The driver didn't speak and drove me straight home. My mother had stopped talking to me, and I wondered why. She had been quiet for a such long time, ever since I had plunged that knife into her throat.

As usual I used themostdangerouswritingapp.com to write each five minute freewrite (and then tidied it up a bit in google docs afterwards):
