Curiosity, addiction, taste, going beyond something... why do we do this? Is this the same behaviour as not resisting telling a lie, for instance? Is the calculation simply about receiving instant desire satisfaction, vs. receiving a known future pain? Is this because we're mostly, naturally optimistic about the future pain we know we should receive?
