Freestyle Gardening... Pea's Song

KIMG4101-02.jpeg

Welcome to the beauty that is my Garden!

Most folks garden to put food upon the table. The same is true here at Borrowed Earth Homestead.
These peas are currently featured here in their capacity of food.

Check it out!

However, there is so much more going on if you stop to listen. I feel plants communicate with us, singing us their songs.

Join me on quick visit to the peas of my garden.

Early Peas

These peas are from seed saved from last year's garden. I sowed them very early this spring, back in February, I believe.

They were slow to grow as we had a strange cold spring this year. The end of April finally saw them big enough to need some sticks for support.

The most obvious song a plant gives us is it's flower. This one is so delicate! What do you hear if you listen?

These peas are currently in full production! The blessings of a cared for garden are welcomed and enjoyed.

KIMG4010-01.jpeg

They are perfectly beautiful! Sweet as they are green!

We have been enjoying them in salads, and slop skillets and straight from the plant while weeding near by!

Snow Peas... Edible Pods

Planted in early April, these little beauties were asking for the straw to be tucked back to warm their leaves by the end of that month.

Last week they caught my full attention when they appeared with Purple blooms.

This week brings baby pea pods!
I love this one with its flower hanging on

The colors of the flowers are so varied, check these out!

Main Storage Crop Planting

I have been struggling with being kind to myself in regard to my main crop of peas this year.

Here's my side of the story regarding these peas.

We had a cold icy rainy spring.
I was late getting them sown.
I presoaked them one morning to give them a moisture boost.
I wasn't able to plant them that afternoon, and they were forgotten for a day or two.
Sprouted peas called to me needing earth.
I carefully tucked them into their bed, taking care to orient every root down.
I apologized and asked them to be all they can be.
Then left them to do it.

Here's the Pea's side of the story, best I can hear.

Oh! it's time to stir!...
Water awakens my purpose...
Life bursts forth, but where's the soil for my roots?
This light is too bright.
Jody we need you!
Ahhh! that's better, darkness, soil, home!
Rain come bless us...rain where are you?
Its getting late, its so warm.
Oh finally a drink from the sky.
The warm sun is calling us to the surface...we are here!!!
And we had best get busy, the elements and the humans are against us this year.
Must make seed
Must survive!!
Must fullfill our purpose
Go!

The Pea plants have made their flowers, the bees have done their work. Pods are growing. They have survived!

The whole bed, several hundred plants are only this big! My dreams of peas this winter have been drastically adjusted.

I will be attempting a fall crop, something I have never tried before.

Peas experience from my veggie farming days of old...

Working on a CSA farm, feeding 100 families a week, peas were direct sown by the farmer/owner and the crew harvested once, maybe twice if we were lucky. It was really a hands off crop in my experience.

I have enjoyed getting to spend time with these pea plants these last two years. I am learning a lot!

I look forward to my fall experiment, I will be sure to share the song they sing as winter approaches.

I am going to ask for them to grow abundantly enough to be included in our wedding feast and shared with our dearest friends.

Until next time! Get your hands in some Earth and be well. Hugs!
