The Liston is a part of the old town of Kerkyra built during a short French period in the history of the island (early 19th century). The name «Liston» (of Venetian origin) used to refer to a city square or some other part of the city.
The French wanted to create a copy of the Parisian rue de Rivoli and built a marvelous architectural complex of marble-paved broad street and two long buildings in the colonial style. On the ground floor of each building there are galleries, separated from the street by arches, above which hang elegant Venetian lanterns. These galleries are the main attraction, decoration and background for numerous photos of tourists.
Nowadays the main part of the open galleries is occupied by restaurants and cafes. In the cafe «Aegli» I first tasted real ale of Corfu. :)
The Liston is a symbol of the city of Kerkyra and an integral part of its historical appearance.
