Happy Birthday Hip Hop!

On August 11th 1973 a Jamaican-born DJ by the name of Kool Herc decided to throw a back-to-school party at his building, 1520 Sedgwick Ave, in the Bronx, New York and Hip Hop was officially born. Despite a dispute around the date in which Hip Hop was founded, we owe a massive amount of respect to Kool Herc (and his sister Cindy) for the efforts he put in as a founder of what we know today as Hip Hop Culture.

Last year Google Doodle celebrated Hip Hop's birthday with a short video highlighting Hercs achievements.

We would also like to recognize those achievements with this celebratory post and a little nudge to y'all to check out our upcoming curation segment "5ifth Element, which will focus on #knowledge and the pillars of Hip Hop as a cultural movement.
