Radio Silence

In the 1930's, a Mexican airplane pilot, Francisco Sarabia flew over the Mexican desert near where the Mexican States of Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Durango meet. Sarabia, an ace pilot, complained that while flying in that desert area, his airplane's instrumentation did not work properly and his radio went silent. The desert's mysterious secrets, known long ago to the Natives of the region and encountered by Sarabia would remain unknown to rest of the World for another 30 plus years.

The Meteorite & The Rocket Crash

In 1966, an engineer that worked for PEMEX, Harry de la Peña, noticed that his communication radio would stop working when in the vicinity of the desert called the Bolson de Mapimi. He informed others at PEMEX who corroborated this strange occurrence. Then in 1969, a meteorite crashed in the Mexican desert near where Francisco Sarabia's airplane instrumentation had malfunctioned. The meteorite, known as the Allende Meteorite was on collision course with a Soviet Rocket, the Venera 5, but somehow unexplainably changed course, circled the Earth and landed near the small pueblo of Allende. The meteorite, according to Harry de la Peña, was attracted by some unexplainable force to the Mexican Desert.

Then, on July 11, 1970, the United States Air Force launched an Athena test rocket. The Athena rocket malfunctioned and inexplicably it crashed in the desert area where Francisco Sarabia and Henry de la Peña experienced radio communication problems. The US Military was sent in to the Mexican Desert to retrieve the rocket and its radioactive cargo. The Military also noticed communication problems and dubbed it the Silent Zone. The name stuck and today that area in the desert is called La Zona del Silencio.

The area is claimed to have a strong electromagnetic field that affects radios and compasses. It is believed that the area was under the sea millions of years ago and a large meteorite crashed into the area depositing large amounts of material high in iron. Millions of years later, the natives of the area would come to this desert area to observe the many "falling stars" that continue to be attracted to the Silent Zone to this day.

Youtube Video on the Zone

The video is in Spanish, but at about 1:40 you see his compass act strange when it is placed near a stone.
