Forbidden Alcohol and Zols - Pineapple Beer

Cover.jpg

Extended Covid19 lockdown here in South Africa meant that everybody's three week supply of anything alcohol-based ran out a long time ago as we're in week 8 already!

We enjoy having red Wine with our dinner and of course an ice cold Beer is always great at the end of a busy day, but all we have left are empty bottles!

Some of our friends have been making their own red wine using 100% red grape juice, yeast and sugar, but they say it tastes more like vinegar and that's really not appealing!

Many fellow South Africans have been brewing Pineapple Beer as we have an abundance of that fruit available.

I have not bothered until now, but my interest was first piqued when my friend @ericvancewalton asked if I had heard of this so when I saw Qurator's: Hive Top Chef! | Cocktails and Drinks!
with Alcohol as the star ingredient, I got a bee in my bonnet and started busily buzzing around in my little Hive here at home setting out to brew this Pineapple beer all South Africans have been talking about!

These new home brewers are the reason I battle to find yeast for my homemade bread lately!

PINEAPPLE BEER RECIPE
  • 1 Pineapple
  • 750ml Sugar
  • 3 litres pre-boiled lukewarm Water
  • 1 1/2 tsp Instant Yeast

Cut top off pineapple then soak in a salt water mixture to get rid of any little bugs that may be hiding.

Rinse in fresh water, then chop the entire pineapple up roughly, place in blender to extract more of the flavour.

Dissolve sugar in water, add pineapple and give it a good stir.

Place yeast on top and leave to stand a little before stirring.

Cover with a muslin cloth to keep out little bugs especially fruit flies, place inside cooler box/ heb cooler to keep it at an even temperature.

Leave to stand for at least 72 hours, stirring twice a day.

Edit to my post after @truelovemom told me that in her country Venezuela they call this drink Chicha Andida but leave it to ferment up to 6 days as the alcohol content will be stronger so now you know.
I guess that's what my fellow countrymen who really are missing the stronger stuff, are doing as well;)

Strain and bottle into plastic bottles; leave to stand for 12 hours before sealing and placing into refrigerator.

The residue went onto the compost heap.

Three and a half litres of home brewed Pineapple Beer safely in my Hive.

I took a risk using a glass bottle but have used a cork top to seal it; some say it can explode in glass!
I will be buzzing around it often, keeping a watchful eye;)

The verdict - I still have to wait for it to start fizzing, only bottled it this morning.
The taste is more like a Pineapple Cider than a Beer, but it will certainly have a kick!

My little experiment was quite successful, but ironic that I only tried it now that we're moving to Lockdown level 3 which means alcohol sales will be allowed on certain days for a couple of hours only.

Tobacco sales however are still prohibited much to the ire of smokers but the delight of the illegal tobacco traders who are charging three times as much for illegal cigarettes!

Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma who has close ties with a self-confessed illegal tobacco trader said on national television: "When people zol, they put saliva on the paper, and then they share that zol..."!

However, with the high cost of illegal cigarettes, people who cannot afford it will now join the habits of those who share "Zols" (usually Cannabis but can also be cigarettes), and start sharing their cigarettes, as they have less money now with thousands of job losses due to lockdown, and so the possible spread of the virus will be even higher!

A young musician Max Hurrell put together a tongue in cheek remix of that comment which became an overnight hit here in SA.

Excuse me veering off the subject of the day, but could not resist sharing that little bit of news from South Africa under Draconian Lockdown; we however have not lost our sense of humour!

Hope you enjoyed my Pineapple Beer:)
