From under the sign in front of his office window, Supervisor Humphrey peered sternly.

Suddenly his large frame loomed over the worker's open area.

Simultaneously, all work stopped.

Surveying his superb handiwork, Humphrey was proud that upper management chose him to oversee the specifications of how the worker cubicles would be placed in relation to his office.

He loved the open concept cubicle style office arrangement suggested to him by an ambitious subordinate.

Humphrey could now see how all the case workers utilized their time.

Thinking he was highly respected by his subordinates and deserving of a higher position, he decided to help the selection along.

Quickly responding to his boss' hand motion, Dylan rushed to retrieve the recommendation ballots to distribute to fellow case workers.

Remembering the second reason for leaving his sanctuary, Humphrey shouted, “half of the day is behind us good people,” motioning towards the clock.

He was yesterday tired of micromanaging these workers.

Only God knows!

"I want every case cleared from your desks before leaving,” Humphrey ordered.

He turned as he finished, looking directly at Jaylene.

From his stance, Humphrey's case count confirmed his suspicion she'd miss her quota again today.

He shook his head in disgust.

Before he could finish uttering the words "lunch time", Jaylene grabbed her handbag, caught the elevator, and was the first in line at the cafeteria.

Sitting alone in the corner, her handbag covering the small table, she ate half the sandwich, stuffing the remainder in her bag.

A quick cursory glance made sure other co-workers didn’t want to interrupt her quiet time with petty office gossip, almost always about one toxic topic.

Heartless Humphrey.

Deep in thought while moving her head from side to side, Jaylene was startled by the alarm she’d set on her phone signaling lunch was over and time to quickly return.

Dylan stared at Jaylene's desk and wished she'd confide in him why she couldn't complete the quota.

He'd hate to include her name in the list he had compiled, but the promise of a trainee supervisor position included being able to gauge the competence of his staff.

Dylan suspected why completing the quota was a struggle for her each day, and it wasn't about accuracy.

So he refused to add her name.

As Dylan finalized his 1st quarter staff reduction list, he noticed Jaylene glance quickly on each side of her cubicle before sliding some papers back on her desk.

Unnecessary.

Dylan looked up just as Humphrey jerked the paper from his hand so he could scan the unsuspecting candidates' names before forwarding the list to Human Resources.

Satisfied, Dylan smiled as Humphrey’s mouth dropped, then closed as if for the first time he was utterly speechless.

His browbeating days were over.

All demoralizing reminders removed, Dylan smiled at Jaylene’s new 50” monitor.

Dylan's staff settled into their new routine, chatting while inputting cases as he shut the door to his office and lowered the blinds.
